Here’s my selection of the 10 best luxury hotels in Istanbul, the fascinating city where East meets West.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a luxury hotel and/or flight review.

Today (September 30, 2015): Hotel review: St Regis Istanbul (Turkey).

The St. Regis Istanbul takes up residence in the most prestigious address in the city, the Nisantasi district, which is also known as the 5th Avenue of Istanbul. With its modernist Art Deco influence and consummate dedication to service, the hotel echoes Nisantasi’s traditons and style. This new social epicenter is the ideal luxury hotel in Istanbul for the sophisticated travelers who like to explore the sights, art, culinary and nightlife scene of this timeless city.

The St Regis Istanbul features in my top 10 lists of the most amazing city hotels in Europe, the best luxury hotels in Istanbul, the best luxury hotels in Turkey and Europe’s best hotel rooftops, as well as in my list of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2015.

In this review (more info and photos below my Youtube clip & slideshow):

  • Pros & things I like
  • Cons & things to know
  • My verdict
  • Tips for future guests & save money

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • The St Regis Istanbul enjoys a terrific location in the bustling, European side of Turkey’s cultural and financial epicenter. Nestled in the heart of Nişantaşı, renowned as the “5th Avenue” of Istanbul and the city’s social center, the hotel is surrounded by Istanbul’s best designer boutiques, top-end restaurants and art galleries. The St. Regis Istanbul is also across the street of Istanbul’s green lung, Maçka Park, and within walking distance of the Bosphorus, Taksim Square, and the Istanbul Congress Center.
  • The hotel marks the Turkish debut of the legendary St Regis Hotel Group (managed by Starwood hotels), which is one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands (and also one of my favorites).
  • The seven-floor hotel, with its aluminium and copper facade occupying a prime corner site, opened last March, making it one of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2015. Everything is brand new.
  • The sumptuous, two storey lobby is dominated by a spectacular glass chandelier, composed of hundreds glass panels that are pieced together to create a cloud-like sculpture that envelops the reception area in a warm shimmering glow. The lobby also features a magnificent high-gloss veneer wooden cabinet wall accentuated with bronze and beveled glass. Showcasing a curated selection of art objects, it is inspired by display cabinets that were commonly found in Turkish homes at the turn of the 20th century.
  • The St Regis Istanbul houses one of the greatest collection of art in Turkey, including exclusive pieces by renowned names like Fernando Botero, Sam Francis and Andy Warhol together with pieces by internationally acclaimed Turkish artist like Devrim Erbil, Bedri Baykam, all courtesy of the Demsa Collection of Art.
  • Ideally suited for the well-traveled, the hotel features 118 beautifully decorated rooms and suites that were designed by the award-winning Emre Arolat Architects. There are 9 room categories, ranging from Superior Rooms to a one-of-a-kind Bentley designed suite to the presidential suite, with all accommodations boasting a unique identity of discrete luxury, timeless elegance, and compelling grace. I stayed in a 6th floor Grand Deluxe Room during my visit, which has its own huge dressing room, a grey-striped Marmara marble bathroom, and a lovely balcony that comes with impressive views of Maçka Park and the Bosphorus.
  • Bathrooms are stocked with Remède toiletries (soap, lotion, shampoo), which are amongst the best in the hotel industry.
  • The St Regis Istanbul features Starwood’s latest in room amenity, the “Handy” mobile device, which you can take with you during your exploration of the city. It gives you access to free local calls and free Internet within the city borders. More than that, Handy is also your private city guide during your Istanbul discovery!
  • Electric blinds on the outside of the building can be brought down to shade each room in the heat of summer.
  • While in residence, guests enjoy St Regis butler service, 24 hours a day. St. Regis Butler Service has been the signature of the St. Regis experience for over one hundred years. From a forgotten travel item, to a perfectly pressed suit ready for an important meeting, to a favorite book at hand for an evening read, or a thoughtful, last-minute gift for a loved one, no request is too small or unattainable no matter the hour of the day.
  • WiFi is complimentary, as long as you have made your reservation on the official hotel or Starwood website.
  • A world away from Istanbul’s vibrant streets, the hotel’s top-notch Iridium Spa instantly transforms guests with its tranquil reception, smooth beige marble walls and soft candlelight. At the spa, three restorative, albeit small pools as well as 3 Hammans (Trukish baths) promise refined relaxation after a memorable day of enchanting city impressions. Treatments are of very high quality and not too expensive.
  • The hotel signature restaurant, Spago by master chef Wolfgang Puck, enjoys a stunning setting on the hotel’s 7th floor, spectacular rooftop: it combines stunning views towards Maçka Park and the Bosphorus with a memorable culinary experience. But you don’t have to eat there to enjoy the views: Spago lounge offers a year-round open terrace, where guests can enjoy ambient music, signature cocktails, high-end spirits and fine champagne (a prime venue for celebrity spotting in Istanbul!).
  • The hotel also has a second restaurant, The St. Regis Brasserie, which is an all-occasion dining venue that offers contemporary French cuisine with a local twist.
  • The breakfast buffet, displayed in the open kitchen of Spago, is a nice spread of fresh fruits, cold meats, and breads. There is also a menu to order hot dishes.
  • Service is impeccable, as you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. From arrival until departure, I felt pampered by the amazing staff and management. From doormen and receptionists to the housekeeping staff and the butlers, everyone is there to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. This is St Regis at its best!

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

The brand new St Regis Istanbul is hands down the best and most luxurious hotel in Istanbul. I absolutely loved it! I could not find any cons, but you may want to know the following when you consider a stay:

  • While the hotel is ideally located for shopping and dining, it’s a 15 minute cab ride away from the key tourist sights in Istanbul’s old city (Sultanahmet), and from the Asian side of the city.
  • The breakfast buffet, although of high quality, is a bit limited for a hotel of this caliber.

MY VERDICT
  • Location: 9/10
  • Design: 10/10
  • Rooms: 9/10
  • Food: 9/10
  • Service: 10/10
  • Overall experience: exceptional: 9,4/10

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY
  • Save money: read my tips for getting the best deal at a luxury hotel like the St Regis Istanbul (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Starwood Preferred Guests (SPG) with Gold or Platinum status are well treated, with – amongst other benefits – free WiFi, complementary room upgrade (when available), early check-in or late check-out  (when available), and free breakfast (SPG platinum). Click here to read my review of the SPG program (with pros & cons).
  • Book your room on the official hotel, Starwood or SPG website to receive complimentary WiFi.
  • Read my tips for preparing your trip in time.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Istanbul is September to November. That’s when the crowds diminish, the rates drop, and weather is spectacular. Peak season – summer – sees spikes in temperatures and room rates. To save money and sweat less, visit Istanbul in the spring or fall. Spring is still a little chilly, so bring a coat. The winter months tend to be rainy, snowy and cold with average highs in the 40s (around 5° C). The dip in temperatures (and thus tourism) means that you’ll find bargains on hotel rates; the budget conscious could brave the weather and visit in December or January.

HOW TO GET THERE

Istanbul is served by 2 airports and a taxi is the best way to get from each airport to the city center. Depending upon traffic, the journey from the airport to the hotel can vary from 30 to 90 minutes.

  • Istanbul Atatürk Airport is the biggest airport in Turkey, located 25 km west of the city and it served by most major full-service airlines (click here for a direct link to their websites). Check the Wikipedia page of Istanbul Atatürk Airport for a list with airlines that offer offer direct flights to Istanbul.
  • Sabiha Gökçen International Airport  is located 35 km southeast of city center and is served by some full-service airlines (e.g. Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines) as well as European and Turkish low-cost carriers (click here for a direct link to their websites). Check the Wikipedia page of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport for a list with airlines that offer offer direct flights to Istanbul.

Monday newsletters always feature top 10 travel lists to inspire.

Today (September 21, 2015): Top 10 best luxury hotels in Istanbul.

A fusion of age-old glories and a cool, contemporary 21st-century culture, the magnificent metropolis of Istanbul is the only city on the planet to sit across two continents, Asia and Europe, with a narrow strait – the Bosphorus – in between them. It has been the capital of three great empires, the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and for more than 1,600 years over 120 emperors and sultans ruled the world from here. Today, it is Turkey’s cultural and financial epicenter. With its myriad of world-famous mosques, glorious palaces, exquisite museums and colorful eateries, it’s also very popular with tourists. Be inspired to travel Istanbul in style with my top 10 list of the most exclusive hotels in this fascinating city where East meets West.

There is more information below the slide show. Think I missed one? Share your favorite Istanbul hotel in the comments section, or take my poll below!

10. W ISTANBUL

A proud blend of hip and historical, and a glittering tower amidst gilded domes and minarets, the W Istanbul is located in the center of the historic Akaretler Row Houses, an upscale neighborhood filled with restaurants, cafes, and design & art galleries. The 140 guestrooms and suites of this Turkish design hotel were recently refurbished and carry the soul of both history and contemporary luxury, featuring Marmara marble, Ottoman patterns, and lighting to experiment along with your mood. Rooms and suites with gardens, terraces or cabanas are adorned with flat screen TVs, the signature W bed and stylish luxuries.

9. SUMAHAN ON THE WATER

Sumahan on the Water boutique hotel is situated in Çengelköy, on the waterfront of the Bosphorus on the Asian-side of the city. The 5 star hotel is a restored nineteenth century Ottoman distillery, where the high-proof ingredient was produced for Rakı, the famous Ottoman tipple. It’s a small luxury hotel that integrates high quality design with a respectful presence within its historical setting. In essence the Sumahan experience is about modern comfort in an ancient and spectacular context with a friendly and personal service. It is a contemporary architectural treasure, a heaven for escape and a gateway to Turkish culture.

8. FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ISTANBUL AT SULTANAHMET

In an ancient city bounded by the mystic waters of the Golden Horn, Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus, the Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet is housed in a century-old neoclassical Turkish prison with bold ochre-tinted walls. The hotel’s prime location means that it is just steps from Istanbul’s most important landmarks in Istanbul’s Old City, being the 6th-century St. Sophia, the 15th-century Topkapi Palace and the 17th-century Blue Mosque. The hotel’s 65 guest rooms and suites hint at their ancient (and infamous) past, all the while celebrating the rich culture of Turkey with faience tiles, Ottoman antiques, tapestries, and intricate carpets.

7. SHANGRI-LA BOSPHORUS

The Shangri-La Istanbul is ideally located in the financial and entertainment district of Besiktas, between the Dolmabahce Palace and the Maritime Museum, boasting breathtaking views of the Bosphorus Strait. In all of the 186 spacious rooms and suites, the two restaurants and one bar, and the signature CHI Spa, you will find a tasteful combination of Asian-inspired elements (reflecting the brand’s roots) and Turkish luxury. All rooms come with complimentary high-speed Internet access and many provide exquisite views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait.

6. SOHO HOUSE ISTANBUL

In 1873, Ignazio Corpi, a powerful Genoese shipbuilder in what was then known as the European quarter of Constantinople, commissioned a palatial residence bearing his family’s name. Following Iganzio’s death, it served as the U.S. embassy and residence, and then the US consulate general from 1937 to 2003. In 2014, Soho House began extensive restoration work on the Palazzo, returning it to its former glory. The building now functions as a private club and a 87 room hotel, with furnishings sourced from local artisans, the design bridges Eastern and Western styles. Don’t forget to visit the stunning rooftop pool!

The numerous royals and heads of state staying at the Çırağan Palace are continuing a long tradition: in a previous life, this grandiose property on the European side of the Bosphorus was a residence for sultans. The regal feeling is most pronounced in the Palace suites, whose vaulted ceilings, elegant antiques and textiles evoke the opulence of the Ottoman Era. On-site dining options include Tugra, whose classic Turkish cuisine is considered among Istanbul’s finest. All restaurants and many rooms have sweeping views of the Turkish metropolis and stretch out across the Straits toward Asia.

The luxury five-star Park Hyatt Istanbul Maçka Palas combines elegance with distinctive regional character and historic art deco architecture with innovative interior design. The five-star city centre hotel has 90 generously sized luxury rooms and suites that present traditional Turkish patterns and icons in contemporary scale and composition. 3. RAFFLES ISTANBUL

A beacon above the Bosphorus and discretely positioned in the stunning Zorlu Center, the Raffles Istanbul mixes natural elements with angular architecture in a sublime combination of ancient and modern. The hotel’s 132 guest rooms and 49 suites are divided into eight categories, from Deluxe Rooms to the Raffles Suite. Every space provides sweeping, panoramic views across the city, airy interiors, and signature Raffles butler service. You can relax by the gorgeous indoor pool and dine on gastronomic delights at two signature restaurants, two bars and lounges, and a patisserie. It’s truly dramatic.

  • Other accolades: Raffles Istanbul also features in my list of the best new hotels of 2014.
  • Tip: enjoy free VIP amenities when booking via Virtuoso (e.g. room upgrade, daily breakfast, early check-in, late check-out, and $100 USD food and beverage credit).

2. FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ISTANBUL AT THE BOSPHORUS

Located along the Bosphorus, in one of Istanbul’s most naturally beautiful neighbourhoods, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosporus is a former 19th-century palace transformed into a hotel sanctuary of luxury and comfort. The 145 guest rooms and 25 suites are an airy fusion of traditional Ottoman architecture and contemporary furnishings. The pillared underground swimming hall (with classical music playing underwater) and hammam are not to be missed! Watching the sunset from the expansive white tile terrace or from the outdoor pool with a glass of wine is unforgettable.

1. ST REGIS ISTANBUL

Nestled in the heart of Nisantasi, the spectacular St. Regis Istanbul is surrounded by the exclusive district’s shops, dining, art, and entertainment. Mere steps away are such destinations as Macka Park, the convention center, the city center, and the Bosporus. The property has two signature restaurants: an intimate rooftop terrace venue and an eclectic French brasserie. The hotel’s 118 sumptuous accommodations – including 10 suites, one of them being designed by Bentley – boast a unique identity of discrete luxury, timeless elegance, and compelling grace. All guests enjoy the elevated level of bespoke service of the St. Regis Butler.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a luxury hotel and/or flight review.

Today (October 29, 2014): Review of the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus (Turkey).

Located along the Bosphorus, in one of Istanbul’s most naturally beautiful neighbourhoods, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus is a former 19th-century Ottoman palace transformed into a hotel sanctuary of luxury and comfort. It is currently one of the best luxury hotel in Istanbul, with legendary Four Seasons service to ensure you will enjoy every moment of your stay in one of the world’s most vibrant cities, Istanbul.

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus features in my top 10 lists of the world’s most luxurious large city hotels, the world’s best urban resorts, the best luxury hotels in Turkey, and the best luxury hotels in Istanbul.

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • The hotel enjoys an amazing waterfront location, with a spectacular and expansive white tile terrace overlooking the Bosphorus (the strait that forms part of the boundary between Europe and Asia, connecting the Black Sea and Sea of Marmara). Watching the sunset from the terrace with a glass of wine is unforgettable!
  • The hotel, opened in 2008, is housed in the elegant 19th-century Atık Paşa Palace. The picture-perfect tableau of exterior gardens set against the building’s molded ivory facade is simply stunning.
  • The 170 guest rooms, including 25 suites, feature an airy fusion of traditional Ottoman architecture (without the flourishes) and contemporary furnishings. All rooms are very spacious and nicely decorated, with sleek bathrooms and very comfortable beds.
  • The riverside terrace has a beautiful large swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers . It overlooks the Bospohurus and faces the south (ideal for those in need of some relaxion under the Turkish sun). The temperature of the water is perfect and if you find it too cold, you can always dip into the jacuzzi that is built into the pool.
  • Water babies can not only take full advantage of the outdoor pool, but there is also a splendid, naturally lit indoor pool, with underwater music. This pillared underground swimming hall is the jewel of the hotel spa, which also has sauna’s, steam rooms, Hammans and 10 treatment rooms.
  • The service is top-notch and extremely efficient, as you would expect from one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands. As is the case in all Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts worldwide, everyone knows your name from day one and will go out of their way to please you.
  • The breakfast buffet (priced at 110 Turkish Lira per person) is truly sensational, filled with every imaginable fresh fruit, dozens of freshly baked breads and pastries, a large assortment of cold meats & cheeses, and many local specialties.
  • The property has a sister hotel in town, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet, a 15-minute cab ride away. Both hotels complement each other: the Four Seasons at Sultanahmet is characterized by compact elegance and a central location, while the Four Seasons at the Bosphorus compensates for its peripheral address with bags of breathing space and a killer view.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

This is hands down one of the best hotel in Istanbul and one of the best Four Seasons Hotels in the world. While almost perfect, there are some minor things you need to know:

  • The hotel has three wings, the original Palace wing (with the hotel’s most expensive rooms) and two auxiliary wings. The latter contain most of the hotel’s low- and mid-range rooms, and – IMHO – lack architectural harmony with the Palace wing (some would call them a ‘painful sight’).
  • Restaurant choice is a bit limited for a hotel of this size and standard. The flagship restaurant is Italian: while it enjoys a gorgeous setting (especially when you can dine al fresco next to the water), the food was good but not excellent. The more casual Turkish restaurant has great food but is located next to the lobby; seating is more lounge-like with small tables so it’s not ideal to have a decent meal (unless you can sit outside, weather permitting).
  • The hotel has some minor noise issues. Right behind the hotel is a major street, with the occasional speeding car at night that might wake you up. And in front is the Bosphorus with the occasional boat blasting disco music. Nothing major, but noticeable nonetheless. If you are a light sleeper: request a quiet room.
  • The hotel is not centrally located, and you will need a taxi to visit Istanbul’s major sites. This can be annoying, especially given the heavy traffic jams that seems to hit Istanbul all the time. Alternatively, you can avoid the traffic by opting to stay first a few days at the Four Seasons at Sultanahmet (to visit the mosques and palaces) before moving to the Four Seasons at the Bosphorus to relax and wind out.
  • The decor throughout is tasteful but humdrum, with muted tones of cream, beige, and brown and only a light sprinkling of Turkish motifs (a relief to some, a disappointment to others).

MY VERDICT
  • Location: 10/10
  • Design: 10/10
  • Rooms: 8/10
  • Food: 8/10
  • Service: 9/10
  • Overall experience: exceptional: 9/10

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY
  • Save money: read my tips for getting the cheapest rate for a room at a luxury hotel like the Four Seasons Istanbul at the Bosphorus (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Save money: enjoy complimentary VIP amenities at the Four Seasons Istanbul at the Bospohorus when booking via Virtuoso (upgrade, daily breakfast, $100 USD food & beverage credit, early check-in and late check-out).
  • The rooms in the original palace building have higher ceilings, better architectural details and more direct views of the Bosphorus (as compared to the rooms in the newer wings). I recommend staying in the palace building (if you’re ready to shell out a few hundred euros extra).

Istanbul is served by 2 airports and a taxi remains the best way to get from each airport to the city center.

  • Istanbul Atatürk Airport is the biggest airport in Turkey, located 25 km west of the city and it served by most major full-service airlines (click here for a direct link to their websites). Check the Wikipedia page of Istanbul Atatürk Airport for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Istanbul.
  • Sabiha Gökçen International Airport  is located 35 km southeast of city center and is served by some full-service airlines (e.g.  Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines) as well as European and Turkish low-cost carriers (click here for a direct link to their websites). Check the Wikipedia page of Sabiha Gökçen International Airport for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Istanbul.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a luxury hotel and/or flight review.

Today (March 5, 2014): British Airways Club World (business class) in Boeing 747-400 from LHR to PHX.

UPDATE: I published a more recent British Airways 747 Business Class review, including youtube clip & lounge review, which you can read here: British Airways Club World (business class) in Boeing 747-400 from LHR to SFO (Upper Cabin).

On February 21th 2014, I flew Business Class in a Boeing 747-400 of British Airways (BA) from London (LHR) to Phoenix (PHX). BA offers a pretty solid and identical Business Class product on all of its long-haul fleet (with the exception of its aging Boeing 767 fleet). But while BA’s Business Class (dubbed Club World) raised the bar for Business Class worldwide a decade ago with the introduction of the first fully flat seat, it is now outclassed by many of its competitors. Nevertheless, the overall experience was good and very British, albeit it was a culinary disaster in my opinion.

I have to confess that I like BA a lot, especially its crew. While being a frequent flyer (One World Emerald status), I am still a little uneasy and anxious when flying. What really helps is that BA not only has an inflight video to ease nervous flyers (trailer), but also that their professional and friendly crew always uses the exact same routine for passenger communications. For example, the flight crew always talks over the intercom to the passengers before take-off and 40 minutes before arrival (no matter how short the duration of the flight is), and the cabin crew always addresses the passengers following their flight crew colleagues. Somehow, this predictable routine (often lacking with other airlines) makes me feel a lot more comfortable.

British Airways features in my top 10 list of best airlines for longhaul Business Class.

  • Trip:  LHR-PHX
  • Airline: British Airways
  • Aircraft: 747-400
  • Flight Number: 288
  • On time departure: yes (3.05 pm)
  • On time arrival: yes (6:40 pm)
  • Miles: 5,271
  • Flight time: 10:15
  • Seat: 62K (upper deck)
  • Class: business (D)

In this review (below the slideshow):

  • Business Class cabin layout
  • Business Class seat
  • Amenities
  • Meals
  • Other inflight experiences (crew, bar, lavatory, WiFi, entertainment, views)
  • My verdict (score)

1. THE BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

The innovative “Ying/Yang” seat plan is unique to British Airways: window and middle seats face backwards, while aisle seats face forwards. Because of this unique concept, you may have to jump over other passenger’s feet to reach the aisle when seated in a backward facing seat. On the lower deck of the 747, the seats have a classic 2-4-2 layout (similar to what is found on BA’s 777 fleet). On the upper deck, there are only 20 seats with a 2-2 layout, so there is more space for fewer passengers and it will feel like flying in your own private cabin. I like the privacy and quiet atmosphere of BA’s 747 upper deck so much that I still prefer it over the more flashy business class products of other carriers’ single-decked planes. I hope that BA will keep the old bird flying for many more years to come.

For a seat map of the BA 747, click here. Note that there are 2 seating versions of the BA 747, but the layout on the upper deck is similar in both versions.

2. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT

Regardless of the seat plan, all Club World seats offer the same degree of comfort, with a seat pitch of 73 inches (193 cm) and a seat cushion width of 20 inches (50 cm). The angle of maximum seat recline is 180 degrees, and the overall length of seat when fully reclined (and when tilting the separate foot rest) is a 6ft (183cm) lie flat bed.  Next to the seat, you can find the seat controls, the entertainment controls, a reading light and a power port. The private entertainment screen is rather small (9 inches or 22 cm) and swings out from the side of the private cabin suite. It also tilts up and down, so watching the screen from the near or fully flat-bed position is perfectly possible.

How to choose the best BA business class seat ?

  • Upper deck atmosphere is far superior to that of lower deck, so choose an upper deck seat.
  • Window seats are more private (and in addition, have more storage space on the upper deck).
  • The “honeymoon” center seats on the lower deck, where you’re basically seated as close to the person next to you as you would be in economy, are great if you’re traveling with someone you want to be that close to, though it would be downright awkward when you end up next to a stranger in that configuration.
  • Seats 62A, 62K and 64A on the upper deck are the single best seats since they are the only window seats in the 747 where you will not have to jump over the feet of other passengers (direct aisle access) and they offer more leg room.
  • 64A (my seat for the flight) also has direct aisle access and more leg room, but it is located next to the lavatories, so this may bother some because of the extra noise (it did not bother me, but it was a day flight after all).

3. AMENITIES

Each seat comes with a rather dull blanket, a small and not-so-comfortable pillow, and an upgraded amenity kit. The latter is a drawstring bag (one for men and one for women) that is designed to double up as a shoe or lingerie and underwear bag and includes Elemis products to refresh, revive and rehydrate, created in travel sizes exclusively for British Airways customers. The men’s bag includes Skin Soothe Shave Gel (7ml), a Pro-Collagen Marine Cream (5ml) and an Ultra-conditioning Lip Balm made from Beeswax (4g), along with a Razor, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste and a pen. The women’s bag includes a Limited Edition Pro-Collagen Marine Cream (7ml), soothing apricot facial wipe, the Ultra-Conditioning Lip Balm (4g) and some Pro-Collagen Hand & Nail Cream (5ml) along with socks, toothbrush, toothpaste and pen.

4. DRINKS & MEALS

After boarding, I was offered the choice between a glass of water, orange juice or champagne. I also received a hot towel (disappointing texture though).

HOT TOWEL

Just under 30 minutes into the flight, I was served a sprite (with ice and lemon) and a small bag containing an assortment of cold nuts. Meanwhile, I had already forwarded the movie Captain Philips to its brilliant and emotional final scene.

SOFT DRINK & NUTS

Soon thereafter, lunch was offered, all served on a single tray. British Airways business class food can be a hit and a miss, and this time it was by all standards an embarrassing miss (or I simply had bad luck).

MENU
MENU

MENU

As a starter, I choose the meze plate of aubergine, pepper and tomato salad, labneh with mint, harissa and chili humus. May sound impressive, but presentation was less than memorable and so was the taste.

STARTER
STARTER

As an entrée, I had the chicken tikka masala with dal makhani and jeera pulao rice. I tasted as good as it looked like. Come on, British Airways, you can do so much better than that! Can anybody tell me where’s the chicken in the picture?

ENTREE

For dessert, I had the lemon and mascarpone tart with raspberry compote. It tasted very good (and somehow compensated for the bad starter and entrée). I was also offered a bar of chocolate.

CHOCOLATE

90 minutes prior to landing, we were served afternoon tea, snacks (a selection of sandwiches featuring spiced pastrami with mustard, prawn mayonnaise, and eggs with spinach) and sweets (buttermilk or fruit scones with clotted cream, chocolate éclair, lemon cupcake and raspberry cream sponge). I am not a big fan of British Airways afternoon tea and snacks concept (especially not of the sandwiches served in a plastic container), and it was not different on this flight.

5. OTHER INFLIGHT EXPERIENCES

# CREW: I love the crew of British Airways crew, and this time, the 2 stewardesses on the upper deck were brilliant (and the best I ever encountered). They were so friendly and competent. If you read this, British Airways, send them my warm greetings.

# BAR: British Airways 747 has a a walk-up “Club Kitchen” onboard, where fliers can graze between meals. You have the option of sandwiches, fine artisan pastries, yoghurt, ice cream, fresh fruit, and/or a chocolate selection.

BAR

# LAVATORY: lavatories were kept clean during the flight, but they are small and not luxurious at all as compared to other airlines.

# INTERNET: WiFi is not offered by BA at the moment. Currently, they are testing it on one of their planes.

# WALKING THROUGH ECONOMY: makes one feel so blessed that we can afford to fly business class, especially on a 10 hour flight.

ECONOMY CABIN

# ENTERTAINMENT: Not only is the touch screen rather small, but the selection of movies and TV shows on order is also rather limited.

# VIEWS: we enjoyed some great views while overflying the American Rockies.

FLYING OVER THE ROCKIES

6. MY VERDICT
  • Seat : 8/10
  • Food:  4/10
  • Inflight entertainment : 5/10
  • Service: 8/10
  • Cabin: 8/10
  • Overall experience: average: 6,6/10
