Today: Top 10 most luxurious ski hotels & lodges in the Alps

Winter is fast approaching, so it’s time to start planning your next ski getaway. And let’s hope that this season will be much better compared to the past winter seasons, which were marked by immense challenges as ski resorts around the world were grappling with the effects of climate change. The best place to spend a ski holiday remains the majestic Alps, which sprawl to almost one thousand miles (1600 km) stretching across five countries – Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The Alps offer some of the world’s best skiing, plus plenty of après-ski amenities, including Michelin-rated restaurants, over-the-top hotels and soothing spas to match. To help you plan your next winter holiday, I’ve compiled a list of my 10 favorite ski hotels, selected from across the Alps’ finest resorts & villages.

Today: Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world

Is it possible to rank the world’s best beaches? Of course not, as preferences will differ from traveler to traveler, based on amenities, accessibility, swimming & water sports options, safety, sense of place, relaxation, and scenery. Nevertheless, being well-traveled and having put my feet in the sand of numerous beaches around the globe, I hereby present you my list of the 10 most spectacular beaches in the world. From coral to sandy and long to enclosed, it should come as no surprise that most of these beaches are located in the world’s best beach destinations. Unfortunately, these beaches are no secret (anymore) and you will have to share their incredible beauty with many others travelers. If tranquility is a must, you may consider swapping the beaches listed below for one of the world’s most beautiful (semi-)private hotel beaches or opt for a stay at one of the world’s most exclusive private island resorts.

There is more information below the slide show. Think I missed one? Share your favorite beach in the comments.

10. TULUM, RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO

What sets Tulum apart is its proximity to some of the most stunning Mayan ruins in all of Mexico: it is here that one of the world’s best cultural destinations meets one of the world’s best beaches. Tulum’s ruin is an ancient walled city sitting on rocky cliff that overlooks a spectacular beach. With hordes of tourists visiting every day, the area is not exactly private, but the broad stretch of white sand and mesmerizing turquoise Caribbean waters more than make up for it.

9. NAVAGIO BEACH, ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE

Navagio beach is an isolated yet strikingly beautiful sandy cove on the Greek island of Zakynthos. It is often referred to as the Shipwreck Beach because it is home to the wreck of a ship called Panagiotis that is believed to have been a smugglers ship. The area is defined by its sheer limestone cliffs, white sand beaches, and clear blue water, which attract thousands of tourists yearly. The strip of beach is accessed only by boat, but you can see it from above if you stand on the high side of the surrounding cliffs.

8. GRACE BAY, TURKS & CAICOS

The Turks and Caicos comprise 40 islands and cays, of which Providenciales is the main tourist centre. It’s here, on the northern shore, that you’ll find Grace Bay, a 19 km (12 mi) paradise-perfect mix of sugary sand and transparent water, fringed by a coral reef system with fabulous snorkeling and diving. Unfortunately, an increasing number of resorts and condo hotels have sprung up along the shore in recent years, so you may be better off these days on the more private hotel beaches of Amanyara or Parrot Cay.

7. WHITEHAVEN BEACH, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

Whitehaven Beach is protected by the Whitsunday Islands National Park, and is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Australia’s most famous beach stretches for 4,4 miles (7 km) and is washed by swirls of turquoise, blue and green water. The sand is 98% pure white silica, which gives it a brilliant, near luminescent color. You can reach the beach via a helicopter or seaplane, or you can sail to Whitehaven Beach with one of the many yacht excursions in the area.

6. BAIA DO SANCHO, FERNANDO DE NORONHO, BRAZIL

Baio Do Sancho is situated on the remote island of Fernando de Noronha, an active volcanic archipelago of 21 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 220 miles (350 km) off the coast of northeastern Brazil bay.  Sparkling emerald water and soft white sands are surrounded by vegetation-covered 250 ft (75 m) cliffs. The beach can only be reached by boat or by foot on a dirt trail through a crack in a rock wall with a few dozen uneven, slippery-sandy steps. The beach is perfect for snorkeling and spotting rays.

5. LONG BEACH, VANCOUVER ISLAND, CANADA

It are not only tropical beaches whose breathtaking beauty can make one speechless. The best example is Long Beach, the longest sandy beach on Canada’s Vancouver Island, which offers eye-popping scenic views and an unmatched maritime wilderness. Located within the boundaries of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve between Tofino and Ucluelet, its 10 miles (16 km) of pristine sand are backed by lush rainforests and washed by a cool pounding surf. Twenty-thousand grey whales migrate up this coast each spring and summer.

4. MAYA BAY, KOH PHI PHI, THAILAND

Maya Bay is a stunningly beautiful, sheltered bay on Thailand’s Koh Phi Phi. With a ring of white sand surrounded by mangroves and towering limestone walls blanketed by dense foliage, it’s easy to see why director Danny Boyle chose this beach for cult-favorite The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The main beach within the bay is around 200 m (650 ft) long and features silky soft white sand, with underwater colorful coral and exotic fish in exceptionally clear water.

3. CAMPS BAY, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town tops my list of the world’s most beautiful cities, not least because of the magnificent beaches on its doorstep. Camps Bay is not only Cape Town’s most popular beach, but also the only urban beach to make it into my top 10 list. Boasting blinding white sand set against the majestic backdrop of the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range and Table Mountain, Camps Bay’s water is a bit cold, due to the currents in the Atlantic Ocean, but that will not distract you from the amazing surrounding scenery and world-famous sunsets.

2. POLIHALE BEACH, HAWAII, USA

Polihale is hands-down the Hawaiian archipelago’s most breathtakingly beautiful beach.  This seemingly deserted 11 km (7 mi) stretch on the western end of Kauai, one of the world’s most scenic islands, is several miles from the nearest town and holds a vibe of enchantment and mystique, still alive on Hawaii today. The beach can only be reached via a poorly marked, dirt sugarcane road, making a four-wheel drive vehicle preferable (check with your rental car company for restrictions before heading out).

1. ANSE SOURCE D’ARGENT, SEYCHELLES

One of the most photographed beaches in the world, the blinding white sands of Anse Source d’Argent unfurl across La Digue, one of the 115 island that make us this paradisiacal archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The beach sparkles against a backdrop of enormous granite boulders, worn by time and weather. An offshore reef provides protection from ocean waves, making the turquoise water an ideal spot for swimming. Keep an eye out for endangered birds and giant tortoises!

10. BE A FOODIE IN LIMA

Serving five stars on the global gastronomy stage, epicureans flock to Peru’s cosmopolitan Lima, renowned as South America’s food capital, to immerse themselves in the capital city’s grand colonial architecture, whilst taunting their taste buds with mouth-watering dishes, influenced by local, Spanish, African and Asian flavours. A visit is not complete without tasting Peru’s signature plate, the classic ceviche. An elegant cured raw fish dish traditionally served cold, a true celebration of the Pacific Ocean with every bite, it’s no surprise this is Peru’s most popular delicacy. Lima is also home to several restaurants that rank among The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, with Central (managed by Chef Virgilio Martínez and his wife Pía León) being the most famous venue. Last year, Central made history by becoming the first venue in South America to take the ultimate culinary crown and be named The World’s Best Restaurant. Read my review of Central Restaurant here.

9. BOOK AN EXCURSION TO THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

When we think of the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil automatically comes to mind. Yet it is a little-known fact its birthplace is actually the Peruvian region of the Amazon river and rainforest. This section of the Amazon is the most untouched, bearing a large concentration of wildlife and flora in the vast protected area of Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. The Amazon jungle covers nearly 60% of Peru’s landscape and is home to hundreds of Indigenous communities, who rely solely on this land to survive. This area has also become the last remaining habitat where visitors have the opportunity to spot some of the world’s endangered species in the wild, such as jaguars, pink river dolphins, and harpy eagles. With daily direct flights to and from the Peruvian capital of Lima, guests can easily get to Iquitos, the gateway to the Amazon in Peru and starting point of luxury cruises on the Amazon River. Fun fact: Iquitos is the largest inland port in the world only accessible by river and air.

8. VISIT CUSCO, THE CAPITAL OF THE INCA EMPIRE

In Cusco, every corner is filled with history, as the ancient capital of Peru (during the Inca Empire) still preserves remnants of the most important power of this ancient civilization. The ancient history can be felt in every step you take through the streets of thetown, which seem to have stopped in time. Cusco is best explored on foot, with a walk through its historic center or along the Andean Baroque route, where you can admire buildings with the ancient colonial touch. Museums are a favorite space for visitors, and one that you must not miss is the Temple of the Sun (Qorikancha). Besides, be amazed by the Twelve-Angled Stone or marvel at the art of the artisans in the San Blas neighborhood. A visit to the colorful San Pedro Market can give you an insight into the idiosyncrasy of the people of Cusco.

7. EXPLORE THE SACRED VALLEY

The Sacred Valley is a magnificent valley close to Cusco, irrigated by the Urubamba River, and surrounded by fertile lands, snow-capped mountains, and a lot of history. The Incan Empire ruled this area for little more than hundred years until the arrival of the Spanish, and it’s here that the Incas built their main citadels and temples, as well as thousands of terraces where they grew different agricultural products, especially corn. Today, the Sacred Valley is one of Peru’s most visited tourist regions and home to the country’s best luxury hotels, resorts and spas. The thousands of terraces built by the Incas more than five hundred years ago are still visible. The Sacred Valley – or Valle Sagrado as it is known in Peru – is dotted with Inca Ruins, with Machu Picchu being the absolute star attraction (and deserving its own mention in this list). Other famous archaeological sites include Chinchero, Ollantaytambo, Pisac and more.

6. HIKE IN THE COLCA CANYON

Peru’s third most visited tourist destination is the Colca Canyon, a 3 hour drive from the city of Arequipa. The Colca Canyon is known as one of the deepest canyons in the world, reaching a maximum depth of around 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) from the rim of the Canyon to the bottom of the valley (twice the depth of the Grand Canyon). The main draw of the Canyon are its viewpoints, scenic hikes and hot springs. The Colca Canyon is a privileged vantage point from which to observe the majestic Andean condor; with a wingspan of over 3 meters (10 feet), the Andean Condor is considered the largest flying bird in the world. Hiking in the Colca Canyon is a popular activity, offering spectacular scenery. Most trekking routes to the bottom of the Canyon can be done in 2 days with an overnight stay in one of the villages.

5. TAKE A BOAT RIDE ON LAKE TITICACA

Lake Titicaca, the freshwater lake located at the Bolivian border in the southern Andes, is as boundless as it is beautiful. Located at 3,812 m or 12,506 ft above sea level, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and the second largest lake in South America. Man-made islands and ancient ruins are just the beginning of Titicaca’s mystique, and the region’s deep, rich collection of cultures has turned it into one of Peru’s most exciting destinations. Taking a boat ride on this incredible body of water offers splendid views of the snow-capped Cordillera Real rising over the deep blue waters. The islands on the lake, as well as being very beautiful, provide a wonderful insight into the traditional life of the inhabitants, with many of these living in a similar fashion to their ancestors hundreds of years ago.

4. RIDE THE LUXURIOUS HIRAM BINGHAM TRAIN

The Hiram Bingham Train is one of the most efficient – and glamorous – ways to reach Machu Picchu. In less than four hours, this elegant train completes the spectacular journey between the city of Cusco and Machu Picchu, the sacred Inca city high in the Andes mountains. Named after the US explorer who re-discovered Machu Picchu in 1911, Hiram Bingham’s striking blue and gold livery stands out against Peru’s verdant landscapes. Hosting up to 84 guests, the train’s carriages include two dining wagon, a bar wagon, and an open view scenery wagon to soak in the views. Decorated in the style of 1920s Pullman carriages, each train car has been furnished in polished wood and brass with large comfortable armchairs. The train is managed by Belmond, one of the world’s most luxurious hotel brands.

3. EXPLORA AREQUIPA

Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa, is often referred to as the ‘White City’. More than 500 grand colonial-era houses in the historic center – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – take visitors back to another time, to the earliest beginnings of the fusion between European and Andean traditions, as expressed in the city’s vaulted roofs and arches of white stone, made from the local volcanic rock known as “sillar”. The historic center of Arequipa also houses dozens of traditional restaurants, or “picanterías”, where stone mortars and clay pots are used to prepare the finest stuffed peppers and shrimp chowder. Not to be missed during a visit to Arequipa are the impressive Cathedral, the lively San Camilo Market and the magnificent Monasterio de Santa Catalina (the convent is still a functioning religious complex as well as a tourist site).

2. WALK THE EPIC INCA TRAIL

The most epic way to get to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of an organized trek along the iconic Inca Trail, a section of one of the hundreds of Incan roads built as the empire expanded. The Inca Trail is one the bucket list of many travelers, not only for the sense of achievement but also because it immerses you in stunning Andean landscapes from cloud forest to rainforest and passes a handful of other Inca ruins. The 43 km (27 mi) hike takes four days, camping every night. A maximum of 500 permits are issued for the Inca Trail each day, over half of which are taken up by guides, and the porters. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes, with varying durations and levels of comfort, including luxury camping trips.

1. BE WOWED BY MACHU PICCHU

At the top of a mountain, enormous and imposing stone blocks joined without using mortar were combined to create one of the most important religious, political and cultural centers of the Inca empire: the mist-shrouded citadel of Machu Picchu. Revealed to the world in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, this Inca city is divided into two large sectors: the agricultural sector, with an extensive network of terraces; and the urban sector, with fine structures including the Sun Temple. The intensely green terraces and the imposing mountains surrounding the site combine to create a stunning landscape which surpasses visitors’ expectations. No matter how many times you have seen a photograph of the iconic Inca ruins, nothing prepares you for sense of awe that this magical place elicits in its Andes mountain setting, clinging as it does to rock and jungle.

Today: Top 10 best restaurants in the world

Each year, the ”World’s 50 Best Restaurants” publishes its list of the top 50 best restaurants in the world. Thanks to its panel of 1,080 culinary experts, as well as its structured and audited voting procedure, the annual list of the world’s finest restaurants provides a snapshot of some of the best destinations for unique culinary experiences, in addition to being a barometer for global gastronomic trends. The annual awards ceremony for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants was held in London from 2003 to 2015 before starting a global tour with stops in New York in 2016, Melbourne in 2017, the Basque Country in 2018, Singapore in 2019, Flanders in 2021, London in 2022 and Valencia in 2023.

Once a restaurant is voted as the world’s best restaurant, it gains instant world fame and cements its reputation as one of the culinary hotspots on the globe. However, all the restaurants that have topped the annual poll of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants over its history are no longer eligible to be voted on new editions of the list. Instead, these restaurants are featured on a “best of the best” list, although the latter is not well known to the general public. For example, Central in Lima – which was voted the best restaurant in 2023 – does not feature anymore in the world’s top 50 best restaurants of 2024, but gets an honorary mention on the “best of the best” list. Here are the 10 restaurants that have topped the annual list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants over the past two decades.

There is more information below the slide show.  What’s your favorite restaurant? Leave a comment.

10. THE FRENCH LAUNDRY, YAUNTVILLE, USA

Thomas Keller has influenced the gastronomic world in myriad ways: as one of the first champions of local, sustainable ingredients; as a moderniser of French cuisine; and as the master of balance between classic and modern, French and American, refined and witty. In The French Laundry, there’s no better magnum opus to define his career and everything that he stands for. When The French Laundry first opened, Keller expanded its modest kitchen garden into what eventually became the lush, three-acre smallholding across the street. More recently, it underwent a $10 million renovation inspired by the Louvre, gaining a billowing white ceiling designed to mimic an unfurled tablecloth, with multiple elements dedicated to sustainability. Despite its constant evolution, the restaurant has always stayed true to its classic values, with unapologetic loyalty to pressed linens, fine china and touchstone dishes such as butter-poached lobster. It was 10 years after The French Laundry opened in 1994 that Keller created its New York counterpart, Per Se. Since the launch of the Michelin guide’s New York edition in 2006, both restaurants have held the prestigious three stars, making Keller the only American chef to earn the distinction for two restaurants.

9. THE FAT DUCK, BRAY, UNITED KINGDOM

The sleepy countryside village of Bray, an hour’s drive from London, was not known for much before it landed on the gastronomic world map with the arrival of The Fat Duck in 1995. The Chef, Blumenthal, was similarly unknown: the self-taught chef learned classical French cooking while working as a credit controller and repo man, and has never worked in anyone else’s kitchen. And yet his flagship is hailed as a global gamechanger and was duly voted The World’s Best Restaurant in 2005. Molecular gastronomy is perhaps the term most commonly associated with Blumenthal, but his vision of what it means is more about the science of cooking, rather than test tubes and pipettes. He prefers to talk about multi-sensory cooking, the role that hearing, smell, sight and touch all play in people’s enjoyment of eating. Defining that style is Sound of the Sea, a dish that made its debut in 2007 and now comes in the form of seafood and edible sand plated to resemble the seashore and served with an iPod in a conch shell playing sounds of seagulls and ocean waves. More than 25 years after its opening, The Fat Duck is as relevant as ever, and remains one of the most influential restaurants in the world.

  • Award: world’s best restaurant in 2005
  • Restaurant website: The Fat Duck

8. EL CELLER DE CAN ROCA, GIRONA, SPAIN

If the perfect family business could be defined in restaurant form, it would be El Celler de Can Roca. Run by three brothers with three distinct but equal talents – Joan, the chef; Josep, the sommelier; and Jordi, the pastry chef – it is not only a restaurant serving world-class food and wine alongside exceptional service, but a place so welcoming that it might as well be the Rocas’ living room. Add to that the influence of the siblings’ parents and the fact that their mother, Montserrat Fontané, still cooks the staff meals each day, there’s no doubt that this is a family effort like no other. Illustrating those family values is Growing up in a Bar, an iconic course served in a cardboard cut-out of the tavern that their parents still run to this day, with paper figurines of the brothers and snacks representing their childhoods. If that course depicts their earlier lives, The World is an edible journey through the travels the brothers have made together as adults, with bites influenced by Singapore, Mexico and beyond. It is undoubtedly the harmony between the brothers and their individual talents that led El Celler de Can Roca to No.1 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2013 and 2015.

7. OSTERIA FRANCESCANA, MODENA, ITALY

Massimo Bottura turned storytelling into an edible art form at his restaurant Osteria Francescana. Take, for example, The Crunchy Part of the Lasagna. Inspired by every Italian child’s habit of stealing the best bit of nonna’s Sunday meal, this fine dining version is composed of a sheet of crunchy, tri-colour pasta balanced on a hand-chopped meat ragù and airy béchamel, arranged in a composition that makes it look like it is about to take flight. For Bottura, it’s all about exploring territory and traditions, telling stories of Italian life through the concentration of absolute flavours, as the chef defines it: “Tradition seen from 10 kilometres away”. Complementing his thought-provoking cuisine is a restaurant-cum-art-gallery housing contemporary artwork, another passion of Bottura and his American wife, Lara Gilmore. Then there’s the seamless service in a series of cosy rooms and the unparalleled warmth of Italian hospitality. This winning combination led Osteria Francescana to the No.1 spot in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2016 and 2018, but it could have turned out very differently. In the years after opening in 1995, the restaurant almost closed as conservative locals were resistant to Bottura’s tradition-busting approach to the Italian kitchen. Thankfully, he persevered.

6. ELEVEN MADISON PARK, NEW YORK, USA

Eleven might just have been the lucky number for Will Guidara and Daniel Humm. Five years into their running of Eleven Madison Park, in 2011 they bought it from Union Square Hospitality, the group owned by restaurateur Danny Meyer, who had introduced them in 2006. Eleven years after their first meeting, the restaurant was finally crowned No.1 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2017. In July 2019, Eleven Madison Park entered a new era when Humm took sole ownership of the restaurant and started steering it into new directions. While Swiss-born perfectionist Humm is classically trained, he dedicated the years 2017-2019 to paring things back. The restaurant made its name with his neoclassical style and iconic creations like roasted duck with honey and lavender, or the playful black and white cookies that symbolise New York. Guidara’s slick operation of the Art Deco dining room centred around tableside theatrics. In June 2021, when Humm reopened the restaurant after 15 months of closure due to the pandemic, he did so with an entirely plant-based menu. Daring in its concept, flavours and philosophy, this timeless New York restaurant looks set to be a favourite forever.

5. MIRAZUR, MENTON, FRANCE

If the perfect restaurant experience can be defined as an equal marriage between exquisite food, outstanding hospitality and unparalleled ambience, then Mirazur has hit the jackpot. With its location on the idyllic Côte d’Azur, the freshest produce transformed into a tasting menu by talented Argentinian export Mauro Colagreco, and hospitality led by Colagreco’s exuberant Brazilian wife Julia, this truly is a destination restaurant. That its situation on the border of southern France and northern Italy means access to the best ingredients in Europe is simply the cherry on the cake. A master of reinvention, Colagreco has done everything possible in recent years to keep his restaurant at the top of its game, championing sustainability, rethinking the menu and even renovating the entire restaurant to extend its vegetable gardens and create a more immersive dining experience. In 2020, Mirazur became the first restaurant in the world to achieve a plastic-free certification, as well as acquiring a historic local bakery from which to produce its own iconic bread loaves. The restaurant’s current menu is inspired by the cycle of nature and divided into four offerings (root, leaf, flower and fruit) according to the biodynamic calendar.

  • Award: world’s best restaurant in 2019
  • Restaurant website: Mirazur

4. NOMA, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

It is hard to imagine the culinary world without Noma. When it opened in 2003, the idea was to challenge the Old World order of gastronomy and celebrate Nordic ingredients. The following year, New Nordic Cuisine was born with a focus on simplicity, freshness and seasonality. The concept of cooking according to season is now so common throughout the world it’s almost become hackneyed, but back then 25-year-old chef René Redzepi and restaurateur Claus Meyer were about to change everything. After more than a decade of Noma, Redzepi felt that routine was killing his creativity, so he decided to close the restaurant for good and relocated his entire team to Tulum, Mexico, for a pop-up that followed similar ones in Tokyo and Sydney. He finally unveiled a new Noma in February 2018 at a different location, with its own farm, three completely distinct seasonal menus and a revised ownership structure. Redzepi honed his concept, using striking presentations to create reactions in the diner, including a tempura-style duck breast served alongside its blue-feathered duck wing, and thus capturing the imagination of the global foodie community all over again. Due to its fundamental differences from the original Noma, Many call the new restaurant ‘Noma 2.0’.

  • Award: world’s best restaurant in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2021
  • Restaurant website: Noma

3. GERANIUM, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

Geranium – the second Copenhagen restaurant to take home a World’s Best Restaurant accolade – is located on the eighth floor of the building that also houses the Danish national soccer stadium. Although unusual, the location is blessed with enormous windows overlooking the beautiful Fælledparken gardens – making it a perfect spot to invite guests to taste nature while simultaneously observing it around them. Since making Geranium the first Danish restaurant to win three Michelin stars in 2016, co-owners Rasmus Kofoed and Søren Ledet have never rested on their laurels, keeping things fresh and exciting for regulars and destination diners alike. The locally inspired, seasonally changing ‘Universe’ tasting menu takes place over a minimum of three hours, with around 20 courses split evenly among appetisers, savoury dishes and sweets. Five years after he stopped eating meat, in 2022 Kofoed made Geranium a meat-free zone, focusing solely on local seafood and vegetables from organic and biodynamic farms in Denmark and Scandinavia. Artful creations may include lightly smoked lumpfish roe with milk, kale and apple, and forest mushrooms with beer, smoked egg yolk, pickled hops and rye bread. Each dish is an intricate work of art served on nature-inspired crockery.

  • Award: world’s best restaurant in 2022
  • Restaurant website: Geranium

2. CENTRAL, LIMA, PERU

In 2008, Virgilio Martínez opened Central in Lima with a vision to create a fine dining experience rooted in Peruvian ingredients and cooking techniques. Intrigued by what was then an extravagant idea, Pía León joined in 2009 – then went on to become Martínez’s head chef and wife, laying the foundations of what would become the Central experience. In 2018, Martínez and León moved Central to a spacious building in Lima’s Barranco neighbourhood: Casa Tupac. Featuring a large garden, an investigation centre, as well as León’s solo restaurant, Kjolle (No.16 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024) and the couple’s family home, it is a haven of delicious flavours and thoughtful hospitality. Central takes it guests on a culinary journey through a myriad different Peruvian ecosystems, categorised by altitude – from below sea level in the Pacific Ocean to the high peaks of the Andes. Each dish reflects the origin of its ingredients, from Dry Valley (shrimp, loche squash, avocado) to Amazonian Water (pacu fish, watermelon and coca leaf).

  • Award: world’s best restaurant in 2023
  • Restaurant website: Central
  • Review: read my review of Central Restaurant here.

1. DISRUTAR, BARCELONA, SPAIN

Disfrutar Restaurant is owned and run by three chefs: Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casañas. The trio met at the legendary El Bulli (which reached No.1 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants a record-equalling five times), where each worked from a young age until its closure in 2011. The following year, they opened Compartir in Cadaqués, before unveiling Disfrutar in Barcelona in 2014. Located in the Eixample district of the Spanish city, the restaurant’s exterior is simple and the entrance narrow, before opening up to reveal a light-drenched, white-washed dining room and sun-dappled terrace at the rear. The combination of brilliantly imaginative dishes, unsurpassed technical mastery and playful presentation results in the dining experience of a lifetime, as full of surprises as it is memories.  Two parallel menus are on offer, both around 30 courses. The Classic option is a greatest hits album featuring the chefs’ favourite dishes from the last decade, such as the famously indulgent caviar-filled Panchino doughnut or the brilliant frozen gazpacho sandwich. The Festival menu is the latest manifestation of the team’s unbounded creativity, always backed with meticulous culinary research.

Today: Top 10 best destinations for winter sun

As the colder months are slowly making their way to the Northern Hemisphere, many of us are looking to travel to classic winter-sun destinations. Indeed, while winter promises cozy family moments around the open fire and lovely Christmas vibes, it’s the least favorite time of year for most people (including mine) because of the dreadful weather. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t escape the rainy, cold and overcast winter days. Here’s my round-up of the world’s best winter-sun destinations that offer warm weather between November and April.

There is more information below the slide show.  Think I missed one? Leave a comment.

10. FRENCH POLYNESIA

With 118 islands dotted in the mighty blue South Pacific Ocean, French Polynesia has, as you probably expect, some pretty awesome beaches. Just 12 miles (19 km long), the lush little slipper of land called Bora Bora lies in French Polynesia’s most mesmerizing lagoon edged by fine white sandy shores. Luxurious over-water bungalows nestled over the world’s most beautiful lagoon with a tropical backdrop make Bora Bora a top destination for the discerning traveler.

  • Best time to visit: the wet season (Polynesian summers) runs from November till April. During these months the humidity levels can be at an all-time high and storms are frequent and unpredictable. The dry season from May to October is when tourism is at its peak on the islands; during these months the temperature is a few degrees lower and rain is rare.
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best luxury resorts in French Polynesia.

9. EGYPT

From the Aswan temple near Lake Nasser in the south to the Mediterranean shores in the north, a holiday in Egypt will unveil the rich tapestry of its glorious past. For the greatest cultural experience of all, one needs to travel south to Luxor, also known as the ancient city of Thebes, where you can visit the Valley of the Kings. With coastlines on the Mediterranean Sea, the River Nile and the Red Sea, Egypt also offers a diverse range of beach activities and landscapes.

  • Best time to visit: Egypt is best visited in the fall (September to November) and spring (February to April). The weather is relatively chilly December through January, except in the south, where the winter is very pleasant. The summer is the only time to be avoided for climatic reasons: Cairo is hot, muggy, and filthy for most of June through August, and the rest of Egypt and even the Red Sea coast can also be uncomfortably hot.
  • My selection of hotels: The Oberoi, Sahl Hasheesh and Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh

8. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Dominican Republic is the second largest and most diverse Caribbean country, situated just two hours south of Miami, less than four hours from New York and eight hours from most European cities. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the north and the Caribbean Sea on the south, the lush tropical island paradise boasts nearly 1,000 miles (1,609 km) of coastline, 250 miles (402 km) of the world’s top beaches, magnificent resorts and hotels, and a variety of sports, recreation and entertainment options.

  • Best time to visit: The best time to visit the Dominican Republic is in April and May when the peak tourist season has ended and before the start of the hurricane season later in the year. The Dominican Republic is a reliably popular winter destination for travelers looking to escape the cold up north; but as a result, prices are known to increase drastically during the coldest season of the year.
  • My selection of hotels: Amanera, Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, and Eden Roc at Cap Cana

7. COSTA RICA

When you hike in the majestic cloudy rainforest of Costa Rica, watch the eruptions of explosive volcanos or relax under the palm trees of the white sandy beaches, the thought of an eco-paradise and the most beautiful place on Earth will be on the tip of your tongue. The Corcovado peninsula in the south is one of the most diverse biotopes on earth and will leave an astonishing impression (so be sure to put it on your itinerary when visiting the country).

  • Best time to visit: The dry season is the best time for a visit to Costa Rica and it begins in late November and lasts through mid to late April.
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Costa Rica.

6. DUBAI

Between its gravity-defying skyscrapers and stunning desert landscape, Dubai is a dazzling metropolis, blending past and present to electrifying effect and offering something for everyone. Travelers can gaze over the city’s skyline from the 148th floor of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on earth; explore Palm Jumeirah, an artificial archipelago featuring a waterpark and dolphin habitat; or bask in the winter sun on the private beaches of Dubai’s ultraluxe destination hotels.

  • Best time to visit: Dubai’s high season – November to March – offers balmy temperatures and mostly sunny days. This is the best time to participate to outdoor activities or simply relax on the pool deck. May to September can be uncomfortably hot, but if you can tolerate the heat and humidity, you can save hundreds of dollars as this is low season.
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Dubai.

5. MEXICO

Mexico is one of the world’s most beautiful countries, with a diverse cultural scene, spectacular nature, a rich history, and a vibrant society. The sunny nation is also known for its stunning white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, which are the playground of Europeans and Americans during the Northern Hemisphere’s colder winter months, especially the areas of the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos.

  • Best time to visit: The best time to visit Mexico is during the dry season between December and April, when there is virtually no rain. The coolest months are between December and February, although temperatures can still reach averages of 28°C (82°F) during the dry season. The wet season begins in the south in May and lasts until November (with a risk of hurricanes).
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best beach resorts in Mexico.

4. ST LUCIA

The tiny island of Saint Lucia in the Caribbean awestrucks its visitors by the beauty of its landscape and the colorful culture of its people. Nature lovers can hike through Saint Lucia’s lush rainforest interior or climb to the summit of Gros Piton for breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside and ocean. Foodies will be enamored with the islands delicious Creole cuisine. Saint Lucia is also an excellent spot for relaxing on the beach.

  • Best time to visit: The best time to visit Saint Lucia is in the high season, from Mid-December to Mid-April. During this season, you’ll experience the most sunshine. If you are looking for a more laid-back vibe, the ‘wet’ season might be your pick during the months of June to November, but there’s always a risk of a storm, even a hurricane.
  • My selection of hotels: Jade Mountain, Ladera, and Cap Maison

3. ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is a unique archipelago of about 50 coral islands, lying in the Indian Ocean a short distance from Tanzania. The archipelago is a major tourist destination, where visitors laze around in the winter sun on magnificent beaches, stroll the tumbling streets of Stone Town (a UNESCO heritage site), inhale the lingering fragrance of the space plantations, or get mystified by the island’s rich history and culture.

  • Best time to visit: The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the long, dry season, when most days are sunny and substantial rainfall is fairly unusual. Another popular time to visit Zanzibar is during the short dry seasons from January to February when dry weather prevails although humidity is picking up. The worst time to visit Zanzibar is during the main rainy season, or the ‘long rains’, which last from March to May.
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best beach resorts in Zanzibar.

2. TURKS AND CAICOS

Surrounded by the globe’s third-largest coral reef, the Turks and Caicos Islands have some of the planet’s most ethereal turquoise seas and finest powdery sand beaches. While their western neighbors of the Bahamas went mass with their lost-on-the-way-to-Las-Vegas resorts, the Turks went class, quietly opening a string of very luxurious resorts in the past decade and a representing a perfect destination for discerning travelers wanting to soak up some winter sun.

  • Best time to visit: like other islands in the Caribbean, Turks & Caicos’ dry seasons and peak travel period lasts from December to March. However, the best time to visit Turks & Caicos is April and May, a sweet spot featuring lower prices and fewer crowds. The weather is pleasant year-round with average highs that hover in the 80s, but these islands do experience a rainy season, and the threat of hurricanes lingers from June to November.
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best luxury resorts in Turks and Caicos.

1. THE MALDIVES

Located on the equator towards the south of India, and stretching over 500 miles (800 km), the Maldives are the visible coral tips of an oceanic volcanic mountain range whose outer edge at some points plunge to depths of over 2 miles (3 km). The islands are blessed with stunning beaches, crystal clear lagoons, incredible underwater wildlife, and unrivaled luxury resorts. The Maldives is also home to Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, my favorite beach resorts in the world.

  • Best time to visit: the best weather is between January and April, which also means high season (and high hotel prices). The monsoon runs from May to October, peaking in June.
  • My selection of hotels: read my top 10 list of the best luxury resorts in the Maldives.

Today: Top 10 best Mandarin Oriental Hotels & Resorts in the world

Over the past 50 years, Mandarin Oriental has grown from a well-respected Asian hotel company into a global brand. The group has a rich and proud history which began with the opening of the brand’s flagship property, The Mandarin, in 1963 in Hong Kong. The hotel, which was the tallest building on the island when it opened, soon built up an enviable reputation for service excellence, and instantly became a historic landmark – a status it still holds today. In 1974, The Oriental in Bangkok, which was already acknowledged as one of the world’s most legendary hotels was partially acquired by the group, making the company unique in the way that it has two flagship hotels whose names represented the very best in hospitality. Today, the group is firmly established as a truly global luxury player and operates more than 30 hotels worldwide, with each property featuring a distinctive oriental design (reflecting its heritage) and a unique sense of place. Here’s my top 10 list of the best Mandarin Oriental Hotels & Resorts in the world.

An African safari simply has to be on every traveler’s bucket list. Catching a glimpse of some of the world’s most captivating animals in their natural habitat is one of the best travel experiences one can have. Encountering the ‘Big Five’ (lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) is sometimes vital, sometimes a bonus, but always rather wonderful and totally memorable. To assist you in finding your ideal safari destination, I have compiled a top 10 list of the best National Parks & Game Reserves in Africa for a safari adventure.

10. KGALAGADI TRANSFRONTIER PARK, SOUTH AFRICA & BOTSWANA

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife preserve and conservation area in southern Africa. The little visited park straddles the border between South Africa and Botswana and comprises two adjoining national parks: Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa and Gemsbok National Park in Botswana. Kgalagadi – which translates as “the place of thirst – is located largely within the southern Kalahari Desert and its terrain consists of red sand dunes, sparse vegetation, occasional trees, and dry riverbeds. The magnificent park hosts abundant, varied wildlife, including large mammalian predators such as cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and huge black-mane lions.

9. HWANGE NATIONAL PARK, ZIMBABWE

Bordering Botswana, Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest game park with a hugely varying scenery, ranging from the semi desert scrub on the edge of the Kalahari in the south, to forests, granite hills and valleys of mopane woodlands in the north. The national park is home to over 100 mammal species, including lion, leopard and rhino, and is known for its large population of elephant. This game park is very accessible and all the safari camps here offer day and night game drives and most also offer walking safaris. The highest numbers of animals are spotted in the dry season (August to October) when the wildlife congregates around the shrunken water holes.

8. KIDEPO NATIONAL PARK, UGANDA

Launched as a national park in 1962, Kidepo lies in the rugged, semi-arid valleys between Uganda’s borders with Sudan and Kenya. It’s Uganda’s most isolated national park, but the few who make the long journey to Kedipo would agree that it is also the most magnificent, ranking among Africa’s finest wildernesses. From Apoka, in the heart of the park, a savannah landscape extends far beyond the gazetted area, towards horizons outlined by distant mountain ranges. The voracious Kidepo lions prey on roving herds of more than 4,000 buffalo (the total population in the park is said to be about 13,000) and you will often see herds of elephants moving majestically along the valleys.

7. MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE, KENYA

Situated in south-west Kenya, Maasai Mara (Masai Mara) is possibly the continent’s most popular safari destination. It’s not a National Park, but rather a National Reserve belonging to the Maasai people and administered by the local county councils. Together with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania (cf below) it forms Africa’s most diverse, incredible and most spectacular eco-systems, hosting over 95 species of mammals and over 570 recorded species of birds. The reserve is especially famous for the high amount of predators, such as lions and cheetah, and the 1.5 million wildebeest which migrate through the Mara and cross the crocodile infested Mara river (from July to October).

6. ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK, NAMIBIA

Etosha National Park is unique in Africa. The park’s main characteristic is a salt pan so large it can be seen from space. Yet there is abundant wildlife that congregates around the waterholes, giving travelers almost guaranteed game sightings. Lion, elephant, leopard, giraffe, cheetah, hyena, springbok, two kinds of zebra, eland and many more species of wildlife are found here. At the same time Etosha National Park is one of the most accessible game reserves in Africa. The park is malaria free in the dry season, accessible for regular cars, and the rest camps provide a range of accommodation as well as restaurants, viewing decks, shops and petrol stations.

5. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH AFRICA

The enormous Kruger National Park (about the same size as Israel or Wales) offers a safari experience that ranks among the best in Africa. Considered the flagship park of South Africa, it is divided in 14 different ecozones, each supporting different wildlife. The park was established in 1898 by South African President Paul Kruger as a protected area for wildlife and it opened its gates to the general public in 1927 for the first time. Kruger National Park has an excellent road network and it’s one of the few game reserves where you can travel around in your own car, although spotting the Big Five on a self-drive safari involves a lot of luck.

4. SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA

Experts have dubbed South Luangwa to be one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in Africa, and not without reason as the park offers uncrowded wilderness combined with a spectacular concentration of wildlife, guaranteeing a spectacular safari adventure. With its western and northwestern edge bounded by the Muchinga Escarpment, and the southern border lined by the meandering Luangwa River, there’s no shortage of dramatic topography in this stunning park. Concentrations of game along the river and on the wide-open plains are amongst the most intense in Africa. The park is especially known for its sightings of the elusive leopard and packs of wild dogs.

3. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA

Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park, the Serengeti is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was recently proclaimed a 7th world-wide wonder. The park is famed for its annual Great Migration, an epic odyssey of 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras, all of them chasing the rains in a race for life, while being purchased by ferocious predators. Your chances of watching a kill are pretty high when you visit the area in the right season, either when 40km (25 mile) long columns of animals plunge through crocodile-infested waters on the annual exodus north (June) or when they replenish their species in a brief population explosion that produces more than 8,000 calves daily (February).

2. SABI SAND PRIVATE GAME RESERVE, SOUTH AFRICA

Located on the south-western boundary of the Kruger National Park, there are no restricting fences between the Sabi Sand and the Kruger, enabling the animals to roam freely in a vast conservation area that covers almost five million hectares (over two million acres), an area equivalent to the state of New Jersey. With a high density of wildlife, guests to the Sabi Sand are virtually guaranteed to encounter most, if not all, of the Big Five, as well as a variety of other species. Game drives in the Sabi Sand are only conducted in the company of professional guides and traverse an area shared by a number of game lodges or camps. Sensitive off-roading practices are implemented, allowing close-up animal sightings, while afternoon game drives continue after dark, allowing a glimpse into the nocturnal life of the bush.

1. OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA

This delta in north-west Botswana is one of the very few major interior delta systems that do not flow into a sea or ocean, with a wetland system that is almost intact. The delta is affected by seasonal flooding with flood water from Angola reaching the Delta between March and June, peaking in July. This peak coincides with Botswana’s dry season resulting in great migrations of game from the dry hinterland. A UNESCO’s World Heritage Site since 2014, the delta is an oasis in an otherwise dry environment the Okavango Delta. Protected by the Moremi Game Reserve on its eastern edge, the delta is known for its superb wildlife sightings and also houses some of Africa’s most exclusive safari lodges.
