It\u2019s a country of astonishing natural splendour, incredible wildlife spotting, powder white beaches, charming ancient towns, and archaeological UNESCO world heritage sites. One of the most dramatic stages for\u00a0a classic African safari is Tanzania\u2019s Great Migration, where\u00a0mighty herds of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras\u00a0thunder across the Serengeti plains while\u00a0chasing the rains in a race for life as they are purchased by a large number of predators. But the country offers much more than a Big Five safari experience. Africa\u2019s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, rises 5,895 m (19,341 ft) above sea level from its surrounding lush, grassy plains. Its snow-capped peak is a sight to behold and towers over the land. While there\u2019s little fluctuation in monthly temperatures, the seasons do differ in the amount of precipitation received, which will affect your holiday,\u00a0whether you are looking for a beach vacation in Zanzibar, a trek to the summit of the Kilimanjaro, or a safari in the national parks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The best time to visit Tanzania is during the\u00a0<strong>long, dry season<\/strong>, from\u00a0June to October, when most days are sunny and substantial rainfall is fairly unusual.<\/li>\n<li>Another\u00a0popular time to visit Tanzania is during the\u00a0<strong>short dry season<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0January to February\u00a0when dry weather prevails although humidity is picking up.<\/li>\n<li>The worst time to visit Tanzania is during the\u00a0main rainy season, or the \u2018<strong>long rains<\/strong>\u2019, which last from\u00a0March to\u00a0May. Daily heavy tropical downpours (mainly occurring in the afternoon) are the norm and can ruin a holiday.<\/li>\n<li>During\u00a0November\u00a0and\u00a0December\u00a0there\u2019s another rainy season, the so-called \u2018<strong>short rains<\/strong>\u2019, but these are much lighter, less frequent and less reliable than the long rains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The best time to visit Tanzania depends on your interests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The best time to witness the\u00a0<strong>Great Migration<\/strong>\u00a0in the Serengeti is probably February and March (start of the long rains) when the wildebeest and zebra congregate and calve on the vast treeless plains. Not only can you enjoy seeing baby animals, but the predators are at the highest number too. \u00a0In\u00a0June and July, the great migration hops over to Kenya\u2019s Masai Mara and this is the time that you can witness spectacular Grumeti River crossings with crocodiles killing their prey (although it is hard to predict the exact time of this event).<\/li>\n<li>The best time for a beach holiday in\u00a0<strong>Zanzibar<\/strong>\u00a0is the long dry season(June to October), or the short dry season (January and February). During the short rains, it doesn\u2019t rain every day, but days can be overcast and cloudy. Zanzibar is best avoided during the long rains.<\/li>\n<li>The best time to climb\u00a0<strong>Kilimanjaro<\/strong>\u00a0tends to be the warmest and driest months (July &amp; August, and January &amp; February). The primary issue is safety, as the risks associated with climbing increase significantly when the weather is foul. The effects of rain, mud, snow, ice and cold can be very strenuous on the body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you want to combine a safari, mountain trek, and beach holiday in one itinerary, I recommend to travel in July or February.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>HOW TO GET THERE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Tanzania receives numerous international and domestic daily flights\u00a0via its three main airports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Julius Nyerere International Airport<\/b>\u00a0(DAR) is the\u00a0international airport\u00a0of\u00a0Dar es Salaam, the largest city in\u00a0Tanzania. It is located about 12 kilometres (7.5\u00a0mi) southwest of the city centre. The airport has flights to destinations in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It is named after\u00a0Julius Nyerere, the nation\u2019s first president. Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Nyerere_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Dar Es Salaam.<\/li>\n<li><b>Abeid Amani Karume International Airport<\/b>\u00a0(ZNZ)\u00a0is the main airport in the\u00a0Zanzibar Archipelago\u00a0located on\u00a0Unguja Island. It is about 5 kilometres (3.1\u00a0mi) south of\u00a0Zanzibar City, the capital of\u00a0Zanzibar. It was previously known as\u00a0Kisauni Airport\u00a0and\u00a0Zanzibar International Airport, but\u00a0was renamed in 2010 in honour of\u00a0Abeid Amani Karume, the island\u2019s first president. Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abeid_Amani_Karume_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Zanzibar.<\/li>\n<li><b>Kilimanjaro International Airport\u00a0<\/b>(JRO) is the international airport\u00a0in northern\u00a0Tanzania\u00a0that serves the cities of\u00a0Arusha\u00a0and\u00a0Moshi. This is the preferred airport for a safari on the Northern Circuit. Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kilimanjaro_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Kilimanjaro.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some visitors fly to Kenia\u2019s Nairobi International Airport (NBO),\u00a0and then take a private or shared shuttle bus service which operates between Nairobi and Arusha, the closest town to the parks on the Northern Safari Circuit.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to travel the entire country, it\u2019s best to either arrive in Kilimanjaro and depart from Zanzibar, or the other way around. Some airliners offer multi-city tickets at often the same price for a round-trip ticket.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.klm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KLM<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qatarairways.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qatar Airways<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethiopianairlines.com\/AA\/EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethiopian Airlines<\/a>\u00a0currently have the best connections to the country since they serve at least two airports within Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>Before you buy a plane ticket, consider reading my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/how-to-book-a-flight\/\">tips &amp; tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Requirements\u00a0for\u00a0entry\u00a0into Tanzania differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Tanzanian embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Hawaii.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You need an\u00a0<b>international passport<\/b>\u00a0with at least six months validity to enter Tanzania.<\/li>\n<li>Most nationalities need a\u00a0<strong>tourist or business visa<\/strong>\u00a0to enter Tanzania. You should get one from your nearest Tanzanian embassy or consulate\u00a0before you travel.<\/li>\n<li>You need a\u00a0<strong>yellow fever certificate<\/strong>.\u00a0Although Tanzania is not listed as a Yellow Fever endemic country, immigration officials may ask to see Yellow Fever vaccination certificates or exemption certificates upon arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure you read my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/2014\/02\/28\/10-tips-to-start-preparing-your-trip\/\">10 tips to plan a worry-free trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>GETTING AROUND<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Although self-driving in Tanzania is not recommended due to poor road conditions, it\u2019s still easy to get around by making use of one of the several modes of transportation that are available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you book a safari, the operator or lodge will always arrange a\u00a0<strong>driver<\/strong>\u00a0who doubles as an informal guide. Most tourists in the Northern Circuit will explore the National Parks in that area (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara) with a driver in a four-wheel drive vehicle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Domestic flights<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0the quickest and most comfortable option if you want to visit several parts of the country during your journey.\u00a0There are several domestic airlines that link the most popular safari destinations and provide services to the coast. Some of the more upmarket safari lodges have their own airstrips and use small planes operated by private air charter companies to ferry their guests in, which is a good alternative to long drives on dusty roads. These are some of Tanzania\u2019s domestic airlines that offer online bookings:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.precisionairtz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Precision Air<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coastal.co.tz\/\">Coastal Aviation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airexcelonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air Excel<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zanair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZanAir<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regionaltanzania.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regional Air<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Long-haul<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>buses<\/strong>\u00a0are the best and cheapest way to travel for tourists on a budget. Large buses and\u00a0<i>dala-dala<\/i>\u00a0cover a nation-wide network that links the major towns, including international routes from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi and Mombasa in Kenya. As I experienced myself during my travels in Tanzania as a student, some of the buses are (dangerously) tired, can be driven rather recklessly, and can be overcrowded.<\/li>\n<li>There are two\u00a0<strong>major railways<\/strong>\u00a0that crisscross Tanzania and offer a limited number services per week. Clean bedding is provided in cars with sleeping berths, and there are dining cars. Recommend safari operator:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.andbeyond.com\/\">&amp;Beyond<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/singita.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Singita<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Week two<\/strong>: climb Mount Kilimanjaro.\u00a0There are seven established routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, varying from 5 to 9 days.\u00a0Known as the \u201cCoca-Cola\u201d route, the Marangu route is most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. Make only use of a reputable travel agency to organize your trek.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Week three<\/strong>: explore Zanzibar: stay two nights in Stone Town (recommended hotel:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zanzibar.park.hyatt.com\/en\/hotel\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Park Hyatt Zanzibar<\/a>), followed by 4 to 5 daus of relaxation in a beach resort\u00a0(recommended hotel:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.andbeyond.com\/our-lodges\/africa\/zanzibar\/andbeyond-mnemba-island\/?utm_source=Direct&amp;utm_medium=LuxuryTravelExpert&amp;utm_campaign=PR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&amp;Beyond Mnemba Island<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the planning of your own travel itinerary in Tanzania, I highly recommend the excellent itineraries as provided by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/tanzania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Lonely Planet<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frommers.com\/destinations\/tanzania\"
