The tropical climate in Sri Lanka is complex as it is dictated by two monsoon seasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>south-western monsoon<\/strong> brings rain to the Sri Lanka southern and western regions between May and September, while the dry season in this region runs from December to March. These regions are Sri Lanka\u2019s most popular tourist areas (e.g. Colombo, resort towns, and Yala National Park).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>north-eastern monsoon<\/strong> brings wind and rain to Sri Lanka\u2019s north and eastern coastal regions between mid-November and January, and drier weather between May and September.<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s also an inter-monsoonal season in October and the first half of November, which sees fine weather for most of the island interspersed with sudden thunderstorms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in all, the drier transition months of April and September are the best to see the whole country.\u00a0As with many South-East Asian destinations, the period from December to mid-April is considered the peak season for overall weather and therefore overall visitor numbers. For a detailed month to month weather report of the different regions in Sri Lanka, check\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selectiveasia.com\/sri-lanka-holidays\/weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this excellent website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"how\"><strong>HOW TO GET THERE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Sri Lanka receives numerous international flights\u00a0via its main airport,\u00a0Bandaranaike International Airport. It is named after former Prime Minister\u00a0SWRD Bandaranaike\u00a0and is located in a suburb of\u00a0Negombo, 20 miles (32.5\u00a0km) north of the commercial capital\u00a0Colombo. Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bandaranaike_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Colombo.<\/p>\n<p>Before you buy a plane ticket, consider reading my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/how-to-book-a-flight\/\">tips &amp; tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"requirements\"><strong>TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Requirements\u00a0for\u00a0entry\u00a0into Sri Lanka differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Sri Lankan embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You need an\u00a0<b>international passport<\/b>\u00a0with at least six months validity to enter Sri Lanka.<\/li>\n<li>Most nationalities need a\u00a0<strong>tourist or business visa<\/strong>\u00a0to enter Sri Lanka. You can apply for one online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eta.gov.lk\/slvisa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0Tourist visas are normally issued for a maximum period of 30 days.<\/li>\n<li>You need a\u00a0<strong>yellow fever certificate<\/strong>.\u00a0Although there is no risk of yellow fever in Sri Lanka, immigration officials may ask to see yellow fever vaccination certificates or exemption certificates when you are arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission and for travellers having transited for more than 12 hours through an\u00a0airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure you read my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/2014\/02\/28\/10-tips-to-start-preparing-your-trip\/\">10 tips to plan a worry-free trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"getting\"><strong>GETTING AROUND<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Although Sri Lanka is relatively small in size, traveling around the island can be frustrating and time-consuming. With the exception of the highway between Colombo and Galle, the country\u2019s narrow roads and dangerous traffic &#8211; congested with pedestrians, cyclists and tuktuks &#8211; make traveling difficult.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chauffeur-driven cars<\/strong> are the recommended way to get around Sri Lanka and these can be arranged via most hotels &amp; tour operators.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Car hire<\/strong> is available from several international agencies. Motorised rickshaws are also readily available for hire in towns and villages.\u00a0Most roads are tarred, with a 56 kph (35 mph) speed limit in built-up areas and 75 kph (45 mph) outside towns. The minimum age for driving a car is 18.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charter flights<\/strong> can be arranged to any destination in Sri Lanka. One company offering this service is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplifly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deccan Aviation Lanka<\/a>, which is authorized to operate both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft across the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trains<\/strong> connect Colombo with all tourist towns, but first-class carriages, air conditioning and dining cars are only available on a few. New fast services operate on the principal routes, including an intercity express service between Colombo and Kandy, otherwise journeys are fairly leisurely. The Viceroy Express is the only passenger steam train still in operation in Sri Lanka, hauled by a vintage British locomotive at least 50 years old.<\/li>\n<li>An extensive <strong>bus<\/strong> network exists throughout the island. Most buses are not very comfortable though and make many stops along the way. Private bus drivers are paid according to the number of passengers and can often drive rather dangerously. Two long haul distance bus services operate from Colombo, one managed by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and the other managed by private bus companies. The bus station is located close to the Central Depot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taxis<\/strong> have yellow tops and red and white plates. In Colombo, taxis are metered but it is advisable to agree a rate before setting off. Drivers expect a 10% tip.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trishaws (tuktuks)<\/strong>\u00a0are ideal for short journeys within towns and cities, and for short excursions, the country\u2019s many trishaws would be happy to offer you a ride. The vehicles are mainly Indian-made Bajaj rickshaws. Most trishaws are not metered. Always agree on a fare beforehand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"inspiration\"><strong>INSPIRATION, HIGHLIGHTS, &amp; TRAVEL TIPS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There are several good reasons why you should put Sri Lanka on your bucket list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exploring historic towns, such as Fort Galle<\/li>\n<li>Whale watching<\/li>\n<li>Going on a safari (e.g. observing elephants and leopards in the wild)<\/li>\n<li>Relaxing on the island&#8217;s magnificent beaches<\/li>\n<li>Tea tourism<\/li>\n<li>Indulging in Ayurveda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following, in-depth articles may also inspire you and want to see archipelago in a compact time frame of just one week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Day 1<\/strong>: arrival &amp; explore Colombo (suggested hotel: <a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/2018\/05\/30\/review-shangri-la-colombo\/\">Shangri-La Colombo<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 2<\/strong>: visit Fort Galle (recommended hotel: <a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/2018\/06\/13\/review-amangalla\/\">Amangalla<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 4 &amp; 5<\/strong>: go on safari In Yala National Park (suggested hotel: <a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/2018\/06\/06\/review-wild-coast-tented-lodge\/\">Wild Coast Tented Lodge<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day 6, 7 &amp; 8<\/strong>: relax on one of the country&#8217;s amazing beaches (suggested hotel: <a href=\"https:\/\/amanresorts.pxf.io\/c\/3483921\/1167978\/14222resorts\/amanwella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener
