2020 was supposed to be a thrilling year for new glamorous hotels opening across the globe. And then the coronavirus pandemic struck and we all know what happened next. But as the world is slowly reopening to tourism – and closing again for several destinations – so too have new hotels, offering some hope to travelers in unprecedented times. From Africa to the Americas and Asia to Europe, here’s my selection of the best new luxury hotels that opened their doors in 2020. Some of these hotel are managed by the world’s most exclusive hotel brands.

1. FOUR SEASONS HOTEL MADRID, SPAIN

9. SOHO ROC HOUSE MYKONOS, GREECE

The Cycladic hotel hunkers down between Paradise and Paraga beaches, and has just 45 bedrooms. Each hones a beach-vibe via polished plaster floors and warm plaster finishes. Wooden furnishings, linen fabrics and ceramic lamps create a relaxed atmosphere while plants add bursts of colour and bring the outdoors in. At the heart of the Soho Roc House is the Pool Bar – an outdoor lounge furnished with Moroccan-style floor cushions and Greek textiles and set with stone floors and long grass. 10. VILLA COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

Villa Copenhagen is a fusion of the old post office from 1912 and a new, modern design. The property is located in the heart of Copenhagen, right next to the main railway station and only 15 minutes from the airport. 11. PATER NOSTER, SWEDEN

Pater Noster is Sweden’s most famous lighthouse, remotely located on the Swedish west coast. The extremely hazardous waters surrounding the island have been feared for centuries, and seafarers used to read The Lord’s Prayer – Pater Noster in Latin – when their ships approached the dangerous reefs.  The lighthouse was constructed in 1868 and given the name Pater Noster as a tribute to the sailors’ prayers. Now, a team of Swedish entrepreneurs and designers have breathed new life into the lighthouse master’s old home, creating nine guest rooms accommodating up to 18 guests, a restaurant, bar and outdoor café.


12. ARCTIC BATH, LAPLAND, SWEDEN

Arctic Bath is a year round hotel, summertime free-floating and wintertime frozen on Luleriver. Activities include cold baths, saunas, wellness-spa treatments, reception, shop, lounge, a restaurant focusing on local ingredients, and wellness with an own arctic touch. The circular shape of Arctic Bath creates a protected environment. 13. PALACE ELISABETH, HVAR, CROATIA

Situated in the heart of Hvar directly above city hall, Palace Elisabeth presents spectacular views overlooking the marina and main square. The heritage hotel is considered a historic landmark with a history dating back to the 13th century. In 1899, the palace was rebuilt under the name Spa Hotel Empress Elisabeth, after the famous Austrian Empress Sisi, a generous patron of the hotel’s construction. 14. MASLINA RESORT, HVAR, CROATIA

15. LOPUD-1483, CROATIA

Accessed by ferry from Dubrovnik, LOPUD 1483 is located on the northernmost tip of the Croatian island of Lopud. An enclosed sanctuary, the medieval fortified monastery – built in 1483 – has been restored over the last 20 years to retain its integrity and authentic feel. Twelve former small monk cells were converted into five-bedrooms, equipped with 21st-century technology and amenities. Guests are able to live in the manner of great art collectors, with the Thyssen-Bornemisza family over four generations amassing an amazing collection that spans the 13th up until the 21st centuries.


16. HYATT REGENCY MALTA

Situated in the popular seaside town of St. Julian’s, within walking distance of the beach and less than twenty minutes away from Malta’s international airport and the UNESCO World Heritage City of Valletta, Hyatt Regency Malta is the perfect choice for families looking for memorable stays and business travelers attending meetings and events on the island. 20. SIX SENSES KOCATAS MANSIONS, ITANBUL, TURKEY

Located in the prestigious Sariyer district of Istanbul, the Six Senses property occupies two historic mansions – Kocatas Mansion and Sait Pasa. Both were built in the Ottoman era and previously owned by Necmettin Molla Kocataş, former Minister of Justice and founder of Kocatas Water. 52. AZERAI KE GA BAY, VIETNAM

The secluded oceanfront retreat Azerai Ke Ga Bay is the third property in Azerai Resorts’ growing portfolio. South Korea’s Hotel Shilla Co. opened its first outlet under its new hotel brand Shilla Monogram in Da Nang, a popular sea-vacationing destination for Koreans in Vietnam.
