10. ARRIVE BY HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE AT TAJ FALAKNUMA PALACE (INDIA)

Once the royal residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Taj Falaknuma Palace is now one of India’s most luxurious hotels, with guests living like royalty in this thoughtfully restored palace. Rooms and suites are rich in color and such details as Hyderabadi embellishments and English frescoes. Guest can unwind by strolling the palace’s breathtaking Rajasthani Garden or basking in the heavenly Jiva Spa. To reach the main palace, guests leave their car transfers in a lot near the main gate, then board a horse-drawn carriage for a magical trot along the main colonnade to the hotel’s grand front entrance.

  • Hotel website: Taj Falaknuma Palace
  • Tip: get complimenary VIP perks when booking via Virtuoso (e.g. room upgrade, daily breakfast, early check-in, late check-out, welcome amenity, Royal arrival experience, Champagne heritage walk of the Palace, and one lunch or dinner for two).

9. ARRIVE BY ROLLS-ROYCE AT THE PENINSULA HONG KONG (CHINA)

Hong Kong’s oldest hotel continues to set hotel standards worldwide, offering a blend of the best Eastern and Western hospitality in an atmosphere of unmatched classical grandeur and timeless elegance. In 1994, the original hotel was extended with a 30-storey tower, which is topped off by a private helipad that is used to transport VIP guests to and from Hong Kong International Airport in under 7 minutes. But you can also book a transfer in one of the hotel’s 14 long wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantoms, which were all acquired in 2006, representing the largest single order placed with Rolls-Royce in the history of the company.

8. TAKE A WILDLIFE CRUISE TO KENAI FJORDS GLACIER LODGE (ALASKA, USA)

As the only wilderness lodge within Alaska’s Kenai Fjords National Park, a stay at this exclusive lodge on the Kenai Peninsula is sure to be a unique and memorable Alaska vacation experience. Nestled within a Native-owned wildlife sanctuary on the edge of a protected lagoon, the lodge and guest cabins enjoy stunning views of Pedersen Glacier. The lodge is in a very remote location: it can only be accessed by a two hour boat trip, which doubles as a marine wildlife and glacier cruise with breathtaking scenery, killer whales and puffins all around you.

7. LAND WITH A HELICOPTER ON TOP OF DUBAI’S BURJ AL ARAB HOTEL (UAE)

The distinctive sail-shaped silhouette of Burj Al Arab, a glittering architectural marvel in the middle of the Arabian Gulf, is more than just a stunning hotel; it is an iconic symbol of modern Dubai. Offering only suite accommodation and unparalleled hospitality, there’s no better way to arrive at this iconic hotel than by a dedicated helicopter transfer service. A 15 minute birds-eye-view of the desert city’s glimmering skyline culminates in a dramatic landing at the hotel’s helipad on the 28th level.

6. ARRIVE BY PARAGLIDER AT SIX SENSES ZIGHY BAY (OMAN)

If a heli landing on Dubai’s most iconic hotel will not do it for you, there’s an even more outrageous way to arrive at a hotel about a two hour drive to the east of Dubai. On Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, you’ll find one of the world’s most amazing hotels – Six Senses Zighy Bay – a resort as spectacular as its setting, with dramatic mountains on one side and a 1.6 kilometer (1 mile) sandy beach on the other. For the ultimate arrival experience, the hotel’s guests can travel as a companion passenger with the Six Senses’ professional paraglider from the mountain top to the hotel lobby.

5. FLY OVER AFRICA’S WILDLIFE ON THE WAY TO  JAO CAMP (BOTSWANA)

Located on a private concession in Africa’s most incredible wildlife sanctuary, the magnificent Okavango Delta, this flagship lodge of the Wilderness – one of Africa’s top safari companies – features the best the Delta has to offer in terms of outstanding design, incredible scenery and warm hospitality. Getting to Jao Camp by air from nearby Maun is half the fun, since the light aircraft flies at low altitude over golden-grassed floodplains, framed by lush palm islands, that are inhabited by a staggering variety of wildlife which can be observed from a bird’s-eye perspective.

4. FLY IN YOUR OWN AIRCRAFT TO COMO LAUCALA RESORT (FIJI)

Como Laucala Island is one of the world’s most exclusive private island resorts, offering unspoiled wilderness of rainforest, mangroves, and beaches. Private jets are permitted to land on Laucala’s airport, with international procedures such as customs and immigration clearance organised on-island by request. Laucala Island’s private airport operates day and night, with the concrete airstrip suitable for jets with a maximum 40 ton maximum takeoff weight (aircraft type Falcon 900).

3. HIKE THE INCA TRAIL TO BELMOND SANCTUARY LODGE (PERU)

There are several hotels in the area surrounding Machu Picchu, but there’s only one luxury hotel within the protected sanctuary itself, on a mountain top literally a stone’s throw away from the walls of the mist-shrouded citadel. The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge offers its guests unparalleled access from early morning to late afternoon, when most of the day visitors and buses have left. And there’s nothing like the satisfaction of approaching Machu Picchu and arriving at the hotel by hiking the famous four day Inca trail, which takes you through some of the world’s most spectacular mountain scenery.

2. FLY IN A PRIVATE A340 JET TO ECHO CAMP IN ANTARCTICA

Most people visit Antarctica on a cruise ship, hereby exploring the shoreline of the Antarctic Peninsula, which stretches toward South America. However, the company White Desert takes a totally different approach and takes it guests by private plane to its luxury camps in the majestic interior of Antarctica, home of spectacular mountains and the magnetic South Pole. These flights are operated in privately chartered jets – either a Gulfstream G550 or an Airbus A340 – with White Desert’s staff members accompanying the guests all the way from Cape Town, South Africa to Wolf’s Fang blue ice runway, a journey which takes around five hours. Guest can book the flight as a day trip (with three hours on the ground in Antarctica) or opt to stay at White Desert’s luxury camps after they arrive in Antarctica (Whichaway, Wolf’s Fang or – the most luxurious one – Echo).

1. FLY IN A PRIVATE SEAPLANE TO THE SONEVA RESORTS (MALDIVES)

Some resorts are so exclusive that they can only be reached by private plane. And so are the Soneva Fushi, Soneva Jani and Soneva Secret in the Maldives which use a fleet of exceptional Twin Otter seaplanes, exclusively designed for Soneva to transfer its guests. Prior to take off at Male airport, a private lounge awaits guests to relax and freshen up. Aboard the plane, seats upholstered in Soneva-purple Elmosoft leather and high technology equipment welcome passengers for a panoramic voyage that will undoubtedly make a mark. Each guests receives a cooling kit, which includes towels, amenities, a bottle of fresh fruit juice, noise-cancelling headphones, and a tablet.

Today: Top 10 most romantic luxury hotels in the world

For love birds, February 14th holds a special meaning as Valentine’s day is all about making a big show of love, affection, and romance. One of the best ways to celebrate love is by staying at a fabulously romantic hotel with your special someone. For some travelers, a romantic escape is all about decadent luxury, private dining, and poolside spa treatments. For others, it means a getaway into a remote wilderness spot surrounded by pristine scenery (count me in). And then of course, there are the exciting-seeking romantic souls who prefer sensational thrills and high-adrenaline sports over relaxation and pampering. Whatever your preference, here’s my top 10 list of the world’s most romantic hotels, where lovers can reconnect together.

There is more info (with reviews and YouTube videos) below my slideshow. Think I missed one? Share your favorite romantic hotel in the comments section.

10. TAJ LAKE PALACE, UDAIPUR, INDIA

Rising like a mirage from Lake Pichola, the white-marble-and-mosaic Taj Lake Palace beckons to travelers. The palace itself dates back to 1746, when it was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II. Today, guests are treated like royalty by an entourage of butlers who ensure that every creature comfort is provided. Recreational facilities include a pool, traditional cultural performances, heritage walk of the palace, yoga & meditation, astrology, Bazar, private boat rides, bird watching, and romantic sunset cruises on Lake Pichola. There’s also an intimate spa, which draws rich idioms from millennia-old Indian wellness and healing therapies, resulting in a menu of aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and wraps that are sure to rejuvenate even the weariest body. From mid-October to mid-April, the hotel’s rooftop Bhairo restaurant is open and serves contemporary European cuisine with spectacular lake views.

9. POST RANCH INN, BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA, USA

Nestled high above the cliffs of Big Sur, the acclaimed Post Ranch Inn ‘floats’ 400 m (1200 ft) above the Pacific Ocean encircled by towering redwoods, majestic mountains and panoramic ocean vistas. With natural architecture embracing the coast’s dramatic beauty and the surrounding forests, the 39 rooms blend rustic elegance, comfort and privacy with panoramic ocean or mountain views. Each room features a wood-burning fireplace, private deck and complimentary minibar. The hotel’s restaurant Sierra Mar is renowned for its exquisite food, and features floor to ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the Pacific Coast. There’s also a luxurious spa on site, offering pampering treatments to help ease away tension and relax muscles. From the hotel, guests can explore all that Big Sur’s incredible nature has to offer, or take a short drive to the picturesque towns of Monterey and Carmel.

8. HÔTEL DE CRILLON, A ROSEWOOD HOTEL, PARIS, FRANCE

Originally built in 1758, Hôtel de Crillon enjoys an unrivaled position overlooking Paris’ Place de la Concorde. The property reopened in 2018 as a Rosewood Hotel after undergoing an extensive four-year restoration, its past providing a rich backdrop for its modern-day story. During the hotel’s closure, artisans and designers worked tirelessly to strike a deliberate and delicate balance between conservation and transformation. The hotel’s 78 rooms, 36 suites and 10 signature suites embody an expressly Parisian residential style that is equally warm and refined. Karl Lagerfeld, renowned designer and a great 18th century admirer, has decorated two exceptional suites on Place de la Concorde – together called “Les Grands Appartements” – which convey his personal vision of French chic and modernity. Hôtel de Crillon also features fine dining venues, a newly created pool area, and a spa.

7. THE BRANDO, FRENCH POLYNESIA

The Brando is an ultra-romantic luxury resort on French Polynesia’s breathtakingly beautiful private island of Tetiaroa – an atoll composed of a dozen small islands surrounding a sparkling lagoon 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Tahiti. The Brando offers carefree luxury in the midst of pristine nature and is designed to reflect Polynesian lifestyles and culture. With access to the island by private plane, the resort features 35 villas on white-sand beaches frequented by sea turtles, manta rays and exotic birds. Guests can snorkel or dive with tropical fish, sail in the lagoon, paddle board to a neighboring island, take a kayak above coral gardens, stroll the long stretches of beach, enjoy a guided or unguided marine excursion, or simply spend a day in the spa and wellness center. It was in this natural wonderland that the legendary actor Marlon Brando settled down, and finally found his home.

6. KATIKIES SANTORINI, GREECE

Katikies – a complex of bridges, cubist cottages and infinity pools – is considered one of the most romantic boutique hotels in Santorini. Hugging the dramatic volcanic rim, the property is a natural fit for honeymooners, romantics and couples. The white washed suites have classic arched ceilings and majestic views of the Aegean Sea, which can be enjoyed from the large terrace with an open-air dining area, sun deck and two-person Jacuzzi. For the ultimate romantic meal, the restaurant provides the perfect setting with just four candlelit tables perched on a secret verandah rooftop overlooking the Caldera. The better-known Kirini pool restaurant offers the same breathtaking panoramas, plus a fresh, seasonal menu of traditional Mediterranean dishes. Awe inspiring views, sublime Santorini sunsets and perfectly manicured pink bougainvilleas provide the magnificent backdrop for this perennially gleaming, glistening white luxury hotel that spills down the cliffs of the impressive caldera.

5. THE SILO CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

The Silo Hotel is a magical space, towering above the V&A Waterfront and surrounded by the scenery of South Africa’s Mother City. The hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of a historic grain silo complex, occupying the six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), which rivals the likes of the Tate Modern in London and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The exterior of the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. Guests can watch the bustle below while soaking in a freestanding tub in one of 28 lofty rooms, designed with a bold mix of colors, prints, and textures. Champagne and carving trolleys roll through the hotel’s signature restaurant The Granary Café, and the spa is sumptuously serene. A highlight of the hotel is its spectacular wraparound rooftop terrace, which features an infinity pool, two bars and several lounge areas.

4. AMAN VENICE, ITALY

Neo-Renaissance grandeur meets refined modern aesthetics at Aman Venice. As sumptuous and romantic as the city itself, the hotel is located within a phenomenal 16th-century Palazzo Papadopolion on the Grand Canal. Currently the most (ultra)luxurious property in the city, the hotel is home to museum-quality treasures including Tiepolo frescoes, gilded ceilings and centuries-old leather wall coverings. A private water transfer delivers guests to the resort’s dramatic reception hall, with direct access to its private gardens (rare for this city). More home than hotel, Aman Venice offers the rare privilege of space in the center of the Floating City. High ceilings and spacious light-filled salons are joined by two mature outdoor private gardens and a small rooftop rarely seen in the city. With views to the hotel’s private garden or the Grand Canal, many of the 24 rooms and suites feature protected frescos and reliefs. The hotel is managed by Aman, one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands.

3. JADE MOUNTAIN, ST LUCIA

From its inception, Jade Mountain has been hailed as the Caribbean’s most romantic hotel. Architect owner Nick Troubetzkoy has expanded upon his philosophy of building in harmony with Caribbean nature in his creation of Jade Mountain. The bold architectural design – individual bridges leading to exceptional infinity pool sanctuaries and rugged stoned-faced columns reaching towards the sky – makes Jade Mountain one of the Caribbean’s most mesmerizing resort experiences. The location of the property is unsurpassed, rising majestically above the private estate of Anse Chastanet with 600 lush tropical acres bordering two soft, sand Caribbean beaches with pristine coral reefs just off shore. With the fourth wall entirely absent, Jade Mountain’s 29 suites (called “sanctuaries”) are stage-like settings from which to embrace the full glory of  St Lucia’s twin peaks, the Pitons World Heritage Site, and of course, the eternal Caribbean Sea.

2. ZANNIER HOTELS SONOP

The opulence and finesse of Zannier Hotels Sonop, set in Namibia’s southwest corner, immediately recalls the 1920’s era of British explorers. Constructed on top of granite boulders, the tented camp enjoys a remote and unspoilt setting in 13,800 acres (5,600 hectares) of untouched wilderness. Every object and antique in the lodge’s ten spacious tents are carefully selected – binoculars and maps, travelers’ tales, telescopes, antique desks and handmade stationary – to ensure that every moment turns into a unique experience. The romantic hotel captures the restorative essence of the desert landscape with a spectacular open-air infinity pool, spa, fitness center and daily yoga. Guided excursions include horse-riding from our own stables, private dining atop of the sand dunes, electric fat-bike or walking trails, and private sunset safaris. The magic continues after dark with a nightly gala-style dinner, open-air cinema and stargazing under the endless African skies.

1. SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES

Located on an uninhabited five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll, the Maldives’ most romantic hotel is fringed by pristine beaches, blanketed with lush tropical greenery, and surrounded by a 5.6 km (3,4 mi) lagoon of crystal clear waters with uninterrupted Indian Ocean views. The world-famous resort features 51 overwater pool villas, spread along two jetties that curve into a 5.6 km (3,4 mi) magnificent lagoon of crystal clear waters. Known as the North Jetty and South Jetty, both jetties are connected to the Maldives’ largest resort island, a tropical paradise fringed by pristine beaches and blanketed with lush tropical greenery. Highlights at Soneva Jani include the villas’ retractable roofs, private water slides, a wide range of sublime restaurants, personalized experiences & excursions, and a spectacular new spa facility, Soneva Soul. When booking Soneva Unlimited, guests can benefit from an all-inclusive way to experience the best of the resort.

10. HOTEL DEL CORONADO, SAN DIEGO, USA

Hotel del Coronado is an iconic destination at the Pacific’s edge just minutes from downtown San Diego. The property’s Coronado Island setting captures the relaxed beauty and seaside charms of the quintessential Southern California coastal lifestyle. However, if you consider a stay here, you want to steer clear of the areas of the hotel said to be haunted by one Ms. Kate Morgan, a woman who died under mysterious circumstances in the hotel in 1892. Guest who stayed in her room (#3327) have reported unusual observations, such as the TV turning on by itself and flickering lights.

9. MOANA SURFRIDER, A WESTIN RESORT & SPA, HAWAII, USA

Widely known as the “First Lady of Waikiki,” this historic hotel first opened its doors in 1901 and offers a seamless blend of Victorian elegance and contemporary comfort, just steps from the immaculate shores of legendary Waikiki Beach and within walking distance of Honolulu’s most beloved shopping, dining and entertainment attractions. However, there are reports of haunting at this luxurious property. Jane Stanford, co-founder of Stanford University, died at the resort in February 1905 while vacationing following a poisoning attempt on her life. Guests and hotel staff have said they’ve seen her walking at night in the hotel.

8. QUEEN MARY, LONG BEACH, USA

Once a world-class ocean liner that sailed primarily on the North Atlantic Ocean, the Queen Mary left Southampton for the last time on 31 October 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California, where she remains permanently moored. The ship now offers guests unique accommodations and a wide array of attractions that simply cannot be found anywhere else. With such a varied and intriguing past it’s not surprising that the Queen Mary has been voted one of the most haunted places in America by Time magazine. Among the ghosts reportedly still hanging around are a sailor who died in the ship’s engine room, a ‘lady in white’, and children who drowned in the ship’s pool.

7. TAJ MAHAL PALACE, MUMBAI, INDIA

The 550-room Taj Mahal Palace opened in Mumbai, then Bombay, in 1903, giving birth to the country’s first harbor landmark, combining Moorish, Oriental and Florentine styles. This legendary luxury hotel has played host to kings, dignitaries and eminent personalities from across the globe. The hotel bore the brunt of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, yet reemerged gallantly renovated. As rumor has it, some believe that the hotel’s architect W. A. Chambers killed himself in the building as the design for the place did not go according to the plan. Hotel staff and guests claim that his ghost roams the old wing of the hotel, obviously still lamenting his design gone bad.

  • Hotel websiteTaj Mahal Palace Mumbai
  • Other accolades: Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai also features in my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in India.

6. THE WESTIN EXCELSIOR, FLORENCE, ITALY

The Westin Excelsior is an undisputed masterpiece in its own right: a classic palace with cutting edge contemporary interiors flawlessly paired with unique renaissance features. All 171 guest rooms & suite are beautifully decorated in period style, offering a taste of Florentine tradition. However, night sweats, hand tremors, grand illusions and temporary disorientation are supposedly just a few of the symptoms that you might experience when staying in room 152. Dark shadows overcome the room, lights flicker, the faucets turn on and off and the feeling that someone is laying on the bed with you are constantly reported by guests staying in this tiny room.

  • Tip: get complimentary VIP perks when booking via Virtuoso (e.g. room upgrade, early check-in, late check-out, daily breakfast, and $100 USD food and beverage credit).

5. THE AHWAHNEE HOTEL, CALIFORNIA, USA

Located within Yosemite National Park, the Ahwahnee Hotel was built in the 1920s with the specific goal of attracting well-to-do clientele. The property is an architectural gem, combining grandness and intimacy. With breathtaking views of Yosemite Falls, Half Dome and Glacier Point, the hotel brings the outdoors in, inviting guests to feel at home, surrounded by unsurpassed natural beauty. Legend says that the ghost of Mary Curry Tressider, a woman instrumental in the hotel’s development who passed in 1970, haunts her old apartment on the sixth floor. People believe to see her ghost roaming throughout the floor to this day.

4. THE STANLEY HOTEL, COLORADO, USA

The 420-room Stanley Hotel, known for its architecture, magnificent setting, and famous visitors, may possibly be best known today for its inspirational role in the Stephen King’s novel, “The Shining”. Room 217  features prominently in the novel, having been the room at the Stanley where King spent one night during a short vacation. Sixty-two years before he arrived, a housekeeper in the hotel was struck by lightning in the same room. This Colorado hotel has been featured as one of America’s most haunted hotels and with the numerous stories from visitors and staff, The Stanley Hotel continues to “shine” today, as it did in 1909 when it first opened.

3. THE RITZ-CARLTON NEW ORLEANS, USA

Set within the historic 1908 Beaux Arts Maison Blanche building, The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans retains the grace and charm of an antebellum mansion. Accommodations capture the essence of the city, bridging the gap between the desires for exploration and relaxation with thoughtful amenities that indulge your penchant for the finer things. Several ghosts supposedly haunt the hotel, including an older gentlemen sometimes seen quietly reading in the library and two young girls who routinely run up and down the hallways.

2. THE LANGHAM LONDON, UK

Renowned for its impeccable service, The Langham London was Europe’s first “Grand Hotel” and continues to reign from the British capital’s West End. However, in the hotel’s sumptuous rooms lies a darker secret since the property has the reputation of being the most haunted hotel in all of London. The most active of the ghosts at the hotel is said to be that of a German prince who was thought to have met his death when he threw himself out of the window of an upper-storey room. Guests have seen his ghostly form moving through walls and closed doors and he is often accompanied by a sudden drop in temperature.

  • Hotel website: The Langham London
  • Other accolades: The Langham London features in my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in London.

1. FAIRMONT BANFF HOT SPRINGS HOTEL, CANADA

The world-famous, 768-room Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel stands as a landmark in the picturesque alpine town of Banff, Alberta. Canada’s “Castle in the Rockies” has been providing legendary hospitality to its guests for more than 125 years. However, if ghosts make you nervous, it is best to avoid the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel since the hotel is known for being haunted. The Ghost Bride is probably the most famous of all the specters residing in the hotel. The story goes that in the late 1920s a young bride fell to her death while descending one of the hotel’s marble staircases on her wedding day. Since then, hotel staff and guests alike have reported seeing a veiled figure moving up and down the stairs, or seeing a figure in a wedding dress dancing in the ballroom upstairs.

Today: Top 10 best all-inclusive resorts in the Maldives

With its tropical beaches, turquoise waters, phenomenal underwater life, and insanely luxurious resorts, the Maldives is known as one the best – but also most expensive – travel destinations on the planet. Going all-inclusive is one of the more affordable ways to take the hassle out of a holiday in the Malvides: when everything’s covered in the cost, you can eat, drink and play to your heart’s content without spending an extra penny. But while many of the top-rated resorts in the Maldives offer “half board” or “full board” options, there are surprisingly few true all-inclusive in the archipelago, and even fewer that offer packages inclusive of high-end spirits, spa treatments, and memorable activities. To help you sort through the options, here’s my selection of the 10 best all-inclusive luxury resorts in the Maldives.

There is more information below the slideshow. Think I missed one? Share your favorite all-inclusive resort in the Maldives in the comments section!

This luxurious tropical getaway offers 79 private villas, all with beach frontage, and a cluster of 34 InOcean Villas, the first standalone collection of water villas in the Maldives perched 1 km (0.6 mi) from the main island. With 4 outlets serving international, Mediterranean with Mexican twist, Asian or Maldivian cuisine, the resort offers several all-inclusive packages, designed to cater for different characters of holiday makers in the Maldives (from gourmet foodies and family travelers to spa lovers and experienced divers).

8. THE RESIDENCE MALDIVES

Surrounded by the wonders of the Indian Ocean, The Residence Maldives at Falhumaafushi and Dhigurah makes its home in one of the largest and deepest atolls in the world, just 20 km (12 mi) north of the Equator. Together the two islands make up one of the largest resort offerings in the Maldives. A jewel among a string of coral atolls, lagoons and white sands, this marine sanctuary boasts unspoilt coral reefs and spectacular marine life. Marvel at nature’s magnificence on a sunset stroll along the stunning 1 km (0.6 mi) bridge connecting the islands as you spot turtles, colourful fishes and eagle rays. Snorkeling and diving is particularly good around the island’s reef, as is the resort’s luxurious Clarins spa, the first of its kind in the Maldives. Most guests stay on an all-inclusive package, which allows use of restaurants, beach clubs and bars across the island on the two resorts.

7. LUX* NORTH MALÉ ATOLL

A short transfer from Male by luxury speedboat, the intimate LUX* North Male Atoll resort disrupts the Maldivian mould by replacing traditional thatched villas with over-sized, penthouse residences. A visual feast of nautical forms and tones, the resort is elegantly styled in a scheme that blends superyacht panache with a vibrant South Beach pulse. Each of the 60 double storey residences sits either on the beach or over water. Each residence is crowned with a fully-featured reef terrace – a magnificent private deck elevated above the giant house lagoon – from which guests will be able to marvel at a unique perspective on the planet’s flattest country. All-inclusive rates are available at this resort (some restrictions may apply for dining at some restaurants, special dinners and dishes).

6. ANANTARA VELI

Located a short 35-minute speedboat journey from Velana International Airport, the white sand and azure waters of Anantara Veli Resort will provide the perfect setting for a romantic holiday. The resort’s 67 luxurious bungalows combine dazzling views with modern amenities for a blissful stay; you can choose from rooms types poised over the water with sweeping lagoon views or set on the tranquil cliff edge with the lapping ocean soothing you to sleep. To maintain the serenity of this island, Anantara Veli caters exclusively to adults, one of the Maldives’ few adults-only Maldives resorts. The property offers several meal plans including half-board, full-board and full-board with the option of dining at the restaurants on its neighboring island in the same lagoon, Anantara Dhigu (the latter opens the dining options to eight choices).

Managed by Rome-headquartered hotel chain Emerald Collection, the resort is set on the island of Fasmendhoo which is accessible by a scenic 45-minute seaplane flight from the Maldives’ main airport.

3. CONSTANCE MOOFUSHI, MALDIVES

From ecological thatch roofing to crystal clear water, Constance Moofushi is a unique resort with a soul set right at the heart of South Ari Atoll. All 110 villas – which come in three categories – are decorated with wondrous tones of nature with a hint of Constance chic, and either built on the dazzling white sands or on stilts that float above the turquoise waters. The resort lies on the migration route of various kinds of marine life, like whale sharks, dolphins, mantas, and sea eagles, offering superb snorkeling and diving. But the best feature for families is that Constance Moofushi Maldives is one of the few luxury resorts in the Maldives that offers an all-inclusive package – from premium drinks and exquisite cuisine to luxurious overwater accommodations. So, growing teens can eat and drink endlessly without their parents having to worry about the bill.

2. FOUR SEASONS PRIVATE ISLAND AT VOAVAH

While the Four Seasons Private Island at Voavah doesn’t bill itself as an “all-inclusive”, for $36,000 USD a night, you’ll have the island all to yourself (and whomever you decide to invite to the Maldives). “Entirely yours” from the moment of booking, the island’s seven bedrooms, dive center, spa and 62-ft (18.9 m) yacht extend the spoils of the Maldives’ only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to up to 22 guests on an exclusive basis. Many experiences – from year-round manta ray sightings to mind-expanding kids’ activities – focus on the surrounding UNESCO territory, guided by a team that has already spent a decade protecting it. As are all aspects of Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah, dining on the island is tailored to the mood of island guests, meal by meal, from poolside to The Beach House dining room, at the water’s edge or on a sandbank.

1. SONEVA JANI

Located on an uninhabited five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll, the Maldives’ most exclusive resort is fringed by pristine beaches, blanketed with lush tropical greenery, and surrounded by a 5.6 km (3,4 mi) lagoon of crystal clear waters with uninterrupted Indian Ocean views (the largest lagoon in the archipelago). Each one of the phenomenal water villas has a private lap pool and opens to its own stretch of lagoon, with some villas featuring slides going directly from the top deck into the lagoon below. The highlight of the villas is the retractable roof in the master bedroom, which slides back at the touch of a button so that guests can lie in bed and stargaze.

In 2020, Soneva Jani added Chapter Two to its portfolio of luxurious water villas, and introduced a whole new all-inclusive way in the Maldives to experience the best of the resort with Soneva Unlimited. The latter includes dining at all restaurants; alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at all bars and restaurants; visiting Michelin-starred chef dinners and experiences; wines from the Soneva Unlimited list; experiences, diving, and children’s experiences; and spa treatments. Also included under Soneva Unlimited is a dedicated Barefoot Butler, return shared seaplane transfers from Malé, daily laundry service, and daily replenishment of the in-villa minibar. The full Soneva Unlimited menu can be viewed here

Today (February 10, 2020): most romantic luxury hotels in the world.

This week is all about Valentine’s Day and love, and one of the best ways to celebrate it is by checking into a fabulously romantic hotel with your special someone. For some travelers, a romantic escape is all about decadent luxury, private dining, and poolside spa treatments. For others, it means a getaway into remote wilderness spot surrounded by pristine scenery (count me in!). And then of course, there are the exciting-seeking romantic souls who prefer sensational thrills and high-adrenaline sports over relaxation and pampering. Whatever your preference, here’s a list of my 10 favorite romantic hotels in the world  where lovers can reconnect together.

There is more info (with reviews and YouTube clips) below my slideshow. Think I missed one? Share your favorite romantic hotel in the comments section, or take my poll below!

Nestled high above the cliffs of Big Sur, the acclaimed Post Ranch Inn perches 400 m (1200 ft) above the Pacific Ocean encircled by towering redwoods, majestic mountains and panoramic ocean vistas.

The Brando offers carefree luxury in the midst of pristine nature and is designed to reflect Polynesian lifestyles and culture .

The Silo has been built in the grain elevator portion of a historic grain silo complex, occupying the six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), which rivals the likes of the Tate Modern in London and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The exterior of the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. From the outside, the greatest visible change to the building’s original structure is the addition of pillowed glazing panels, inserted into the geometry of the hotel floors, which bulge outward as if gently inflated. By night, this transforms the building into a glowing lantern or beacon in the harbor. The Silo hotel has 28 lofty rooms, including a spectacular one bedroom penthouse.

4. HUKA LODGE, NEW ZEALAND

Huka Lodge, Taupo is located 300 m (1000 ft) upstream from the famous Huka Falls on the banks of the Waikato River. This iconic property has been consistently chosen by many media outlets as one of the top retreats in the world for many years. It offers a location of great natural beauty and luxurious hospitality, gourmet cuisine and 17-acres of perfect peace and quiet. The 25 guest suites and two superb private cottages are tucked amongst mature, manicured gardens along the banks of the hypnotic turquoise blue waters of the river. In the evening guests gather in the main Lodge Room to enjoy pre-dinner drinks before being presented daily with a superb five-course menu featuring the finest local seasonal produce and complemented by seamless service. Over 20 sublime private and romantic indoor/outdoor dining venues are also a unique feature of the hotel.

Each one of the 24 water villas has a private lap pool and opens to its own stretch of lagoon, with some villas featuring slides going directly from the top deck into the lagoon below.

  • Tip: get complimentary VIP perks when booking via Virtuoso (e.g. room upgrade, early check-in, late check-out, daily breakfast, and $100 USD hotel credit).

There are dining choices abound, from fine Italian cuisine, to pit-grilled feasts in the gardens, to an Indian-Hyderabadi-inspired fine dining restaurant Adaa, voted 85th best restaurant in the world by Elite Traveler in 2017, where six-course dinners are served.

4. THE OBEROI AMARVILAS

Situated less than 2000 feet (600 meters) from the Taj Mahal – the world’s most exquisite testimony to undying love – it is easy to rekindle romance at The Oberoi Amarvilas. The hotel – one of the finest in India – stands amidst nine acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, minarets, pavilions, fountains, reflection pools and terraced lawns inspired by traditional Mughal designs. The resort has 102 exquisitely appointed rooms and suites, each with uninterrupted view of the Taj Mahal and complemented by Oberoi’s warm, personalized hospitality. Many rooms of this elegant five-story building have private terraces. The fine dining restaurants serve pan-international and authentic Mughlai cuisine.

  • Hotel website: The Oberoi Amarvilas
  • Other accolades: Oberoi Amarvilas also features in my top 10 list of the world’s most phenomenal honeymoon hotels.

3. TAJ LAKE PALACE, UDAIPUR

Rising like a mirage from Lake Pichola, the white-marble-and-mosaic Taj Lake Palace beckons to travelers. The palace itself dates back to 1746, when it was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II. Today, guests are treated like royalty by an entourage of palace butlers who ensure that every creature comfort is provided. The Jiva Spa draws rich idioms from millennia-old Indian wellness and healing therapies, resulting in a menu of aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and wraps that are sure to rejuvenate even the weariest body. From mid-October to mid-April, the hotel’s rooftop Bhairo restaurant is open and serves contemporary European cuisine with spectacular palace lake and views.

2. AMANBAGH, RAJASTHAN

Once used by the Maharajah of Alwar as his base for tiger-hunting expeditions, today Amanbagh’s lush compound shelters guests in a modern-day Mughal palace, carved out of local pink marble and sandstone, with scalloped arches and cupolas paying homage to India’s golden age. A sanctuary in the arid Aravalli hills, 90 minutes from frenetic Jaipur, the property is surrounded by mature palm, fruit and eucalyptus trees, which shade the emerald-green pool. Beyond the palatial Suites, spa and gardens, guests will discover welcoming villages, majestic forts and ruins, and the jungle of Sariska National Park, where tigers still roam free.

  • Hotel website: Amanbagh
  • Tip: get complimentary VIP perks when booking via Virtuoso (e.g. room upgrade, daily breakfast, early check-in, late check-out, and one a la carte lunch for two persons).
  • Review: read my review of Amanbagh here.

1. THE OBEROI UDAIVILAS, UDAIPUR

The phenomenal Oberoi Udaivilas is spread over 50 acres on the banks of Lake Pichola, on the 200-year-old hunting grounds of the Maharana of Mewar. The resort offers unique experiences that include private lakeside dining, traditional boat rides, private cooking sessions and fun activities for children. The indoor and alfresco restaurants have lake and garden views, and serve fine international and Indian cuisine, while the spa offers signature Oberoi treatments. I recommend to opt for a suite with a private pool, or for a premier room with comes with direct access to a unique 240 ft (73 m) long semi-private pool and a bath tub with uninterrupted lake views.

The lodge is in a very remote location: it can only be accessed by a 2 hour boat trip, which doubles as a marine wildlife and glacier cruise with breathtaking scenery, killer whales and puffins all around you.

If a heli landing on Dubai’s most iconic hotel will not do it for you, there’s an even more outrageous way to arrive at a hotel about a 2 hour drive to the east of Dubai. On Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, you’ll find one of the world’s most amazing hotels, a resort as spectacular as its setting, with dramatic mountains on one side and a 1.6 kilometer (1 mile) sandy beach on the other. For the ultimate arrival experience, the hotel’s guests can travel as a companion passenger with the Six Senses’ professional paraglider from the mountain top to the hotel lobby.

5. FLY OVER AFRICA’S WILDLIFE ON THE WAY TO ABU CAMP (BOTSWANA)

Located on a private concession in Africa’s most incredible wildlife sanctuary – the magnificent Okavango Delta – this flagship lodge of the Wilderness Collection features the best the Delta has to offer in terms of outstanding design, excellent wildlife viewing and warm local hospitality. Getting there by air from nearby Maun is half the fun, since the light aircraft flies at low altitude over golden-grassed floodplains, framed by lush palm islands, that are inhabited by a staggering variety of wildlife which can be observed from a bird’s-eye perspective.

4. FLY IN YOUR OWN AIRCRAFT TO LAUCALA RESORT (FIJI)

Laucala is one of the worlds most exclusive private island resorts, offering unspoiled wilderness of rainforest, mangroves, and beaches.

3. HIKE THE INCA TRAIL TO THE BELMOND SANCTUARY LODGE (PERU)

There are several hotels in area surrounding Machu Picchu, but there’s only one luxury hotel within the protected sanctuary itself, on a mountain top literally a stone’s throw away from the walls of the mist-shrouded citadel. The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge offers its guests unparalleled access from early morning to late afternoon, when most of the day visitors and buses have left. And there’s nothing like the satisfaction of approaching Machu Picchu and the lodge by hiking the famous 4 to 5 day Inca trail, which takes you through some of the world’s most spectacular mountain scenery.

2. HOP BETWEEN FOUR SEASONS HOTELS BY PRIVATE JET

One of the most spectacular ways to arrive at a hotel, is to fly in one before arrival! A regular in my top 10 lists, Four Seasons has taken luxury to new heights – literally – as you can travel the globe and hop between their resorts aboard the custom-designed Four Seasons Jet, enjoying a flying hotel and exceptional service at every point of the journey. The Four Seasons Jet experience offers  a variety of extraordinary itineraries that crisscross the globe and allow you to discover up to 10 international destinations on a single private journey.

1. FLY IN A PRIVATE SEAPLANE TO THE SONEVE RESORTS (MALDIVES)

Some resorts are so exclusive that they can only be reached by private plane. And so are the Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani in the Maldives which both use a fleet of exceptional Twin Otter seaplanes, exclusively designed for Soneva, to transfer its guests. Prior to take off at Male airport, a private lounge awaits guests to relax and freshen up. Aboard the plane, seats upholstered in Soneva-purple Elmosoft leather and high technology equipment welcome passengers for a 30-minute panoramic voyage that will undoubtedly make a mark. Each guests receives a cooling kit, which includes towels, amenities, a bottle of fresh fruit juice, noise-cancelling headphones, and a tablet.

Monday newsletters always feature top 10 travel lists to inspire.

Today (March 20, 2017): Top 10 most luxurious hotels in Cape Town.

“This cape is the most stately thing we saw in the whole circumference of the earth”, wrote Sir Francis Drake in 1580 when he discovered the Cape Peninsula. Almost 500 years later, the area – with its incredibly beautiful coastal and mountainous scenery – is home to one the planet’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town (Kaapstad in Afrikaans and Ikapa in Xhosa). Known as the Mother City because it was the first to emerge in South Africa, the city owes its multicultural personality to a diverse range of people and events, from the indigenous Khoi and San peoples to local African tribes, from the European explorers to slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar and Mozambique, and from apartheid to democratic freedoms. Blessed with some of the world’s most astonishing city beaches, jaw-droppingly beautiful mountains, rolling hills of vineyards, spectacular drives and tons of trendy bars and fine dining restaurants to choose from, it is hard to imagine a more picture perfect city destination (and frankly, you won’t find a better one). Combine this with some of the best accommodation and service on offer anywhere in the world and you are left with one of the hottest city destinations you will ever visit. To assist you in finding your ideal accommodation in the Mother City, I have compiled a top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Cape Town

There is more information (with reviews & Youtube clips) below the slide show. Think I missed one? Share your favorite Cape Town hotel in the comments section, or take my poll below!

10. TAJ CAPE TOWN

Taj Cape Town is a luxury hotel set in the vibrant heart of downtown Cape Town, offering guests a combination of refined Indian hospitality and an authentic Cape Town experience. Occupying two historic buildings, it retains the architecture and many meticulously restored interior features of the original South African Reserve Bank and the old BoE building – formerly the Temple Chambers, built in 1890. Seventeen new storeys house suites, guestrooms and residences with magnificent views of the Mother City and the iconic Table Mountain. This five-star hotel is ideally located in the centre of historic Cape Town at the entrance to the famous pedestrian precinct, St George’s Mall. Its prime site ensures that the Taj Cape Town is perfectly situated for those looking to discover authentic Cape Town.

9. 52 DE WET

Residing in Bantry Bay, an exclusive Cape Town suburb, 52 De Wet is located high up, on the slopes of Lion’s Head Mountain, where you are sheltered from the famous Cape Doctor, the strong south-easterly wind that blows through Cape Town from October to March, clearing up the city’s air and taking the edge off the summer heat. There are just seven rooms at 52 De Wet, in keeping with the style of a private guesthouse rather than a commercial establishment, and all of them offer open views of the South Atlantic ocean, stretching further than the eye can see. Each room is uniquely decorated, and some of the them come with private plunge pools. Delicious food – and wine – is an integral part of the 52 De Wet ethos, created from fresh, local, seasonal produce. There’s also a small spa on site.

52 DE WET

8. TINTSWALO ATLANTIC

One of Cape Town’s hidden gems and best kept secrets is Tintswalo Atlantic, a 5 star, award-winning boutique lodge nestled at the base of the ocean-facing Table Mountain National Park just 20 minutes from town. Sitting at the foot of Chapman’s Peak, the lodge is the city’s only property with direct beach access (although it’s a pebble beach) and enjoys panoramic views of the picturesque Hout Bay harbour, the dramatic Sentinel mountain peak, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Each one of the hotel’s 11 glass-and-timber suites has a unique design and is named after an island (e.g. Cousine Island, Zanzibar, Robben Island, etc …) paying tribute to the island’s nature and the cultural heritage. The Tintswalo Atlantic dining room provides a picturesque, cosy setting to enjoy beautifully-presented and delicious cuisine.

TINTSWALO ATLANTIC

7. CAPE VIEW CLIFTON

Cape View Clifton is a four-storey, family-owned hotel that clings to the hills on Cape Town’s Atlantic coast, boasting the most phenomenal views in town with uninterrupted, heart-stopping panoramas of  Camps Bay’s white beach backed by the Twelve Apostles mountain range. The property, which balances between a luxury guesthouse and a small-scale boutique hotel, has 9 accommodations, with 3 deluxe rooms, 2 junior suites and 4 apartments. Interiors are light and airy with an eclectic mix of contemporary and Colonial African style, although it are the unsurpassed sea and mountain views that will take your breath away. The apartments have private outdoor decks with jacuzzis and BBQ facilities. If you’d prefer not to dine out every night, the staff will be glad to offer you a delicious simple homemade meal served informally on the pool deck.

Each one of the 120 guest rooms and suites is unique and has its own story to tell. Even the standard rooms are spacious here, with separate sitting areas, desks, complimentary high-speed internet, and cushioned headboards. The hotel overwhelms its guests upon arrival with breathtaking Table Mountain views through the massive windows of the spectacular lobby. There are two sections in the hotel, one being the Spa Island (built on a man-made island and centered around a lagoon-shaped pool) with 40 suites and the other the Marina Rise with 91 rooms. All rooms and suites feature oversized bathrooms and are adorned with fabrics and furnishings recalling the warm, muted tones of Africa’s savannahs. Dining at One&Only Cape Town is a pure delight with two of the city’s most acclaimed restaurants, Rueben’s restaurant, and Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’s Nobu restaurant.

ONE&ONLY CAPE TOWN

3. THE SILO

The Silo Hotel is a magical space towering above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City. The Silo has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above what will become the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), which will rival the likes of the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid.

THE SILO

2. THE TWELVE APOSTLES HOTEL & SPA

Enjoying the most magnificent location on the Cape Peninsula, the Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa is a grand contemporary hotel in Camps Bay, just a short drive from the center of Cape Town. Date palms and olive trees dot the grounds of Amanjena, a ultraluxurious oasis that is located outside the ancient city of Marrakech and managed by Aman (the world’s most exclusive hotel brand). The resort’s indulgent tranquillity is complemented by easy access to the medina and Morocco’s mesmerising landscape. Amanjena’s graceful arches, stone courtyards and gentle fountains reflect the region’s Moorish heritage. Its bold sun-kissed red and emerald-green colours are an echo to those of the Red City (Marrakech) and its royal heritage. Radiating out from an ancient, life-giving basin, Amanjena’s 32 Pavilions and seven Maisons are contemporary interpretations of Moroccan traditions.

The 2010 movie Sex and the City 2 was filmed at Amanjena, although it’s marketed as an Abu Dhabi hotel in the film.
