Find out more about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Best time to visit<\/li>\n<li>How to get there<\/li>\n<li>Travel requirements<\/li>\n<li>Getting around<\/li>\n<li>Inspiration, highlights &amp; travel tips<\/li>\n<li>Suggested itineraries<\/li>\n<li>Recommended luxury hotels (+ reviews)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><b>BEST TIME TO VISIT<\/b><\/h5>\n<p>Mainland Greece and the Greek islands are blessed with a Mediterranean climate, characterized by rainy, mild winters and dry, hot summers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Summer (mid-June through mid-September)<\/strong>: the summer months in Greece coincide with high season, a time when you\u2019re likely to experience sweltering heat, skyrocketing room rates, and hordes of mainly European tourists. The good news is that the summer high season offers the best ferry and plane schedules making traveling quite convenient, and most towns are bustling with nightlife if that is what you&#8217;re after. In summer, expect sunny days and\u00a0very hot weather, with\u00a0temperatures usually reaching 30 to 35\u00b0C (86 to 95 \u00b0F), but sometimes even 40\u00b0C (104\u00b0C) and more, although coastal areas are often milder due to a cooling sea breeze. That breeze can get very strong though on the Cyclades (e.g. Santorini and Mykonos)\u00a0with the so-called Meltemi blowing for long periods, especially in the afternoons (sometimes gale force like winds).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late spring &amp; early autumn (April through mid-June, mid-September through October)<\/strong>: late spring and early autumn are known as shoulder season in Greece. Mid-September and October represent the best time for a visit to the country,\u00a0since the weather is still great (with blue clear skies most of the time), the tourist crowds have left, the sea temperature is at its warmest, and the hotel rates descend back into a reasonable range. The spring months of April and May, before the summer rush comes, are also a great time to visit, although the sea is cold and you have more chance of encountering a few rainy, overcast days. The only downside of the shoulder season is that ferry services and flights schedules operate at a reduced frequency, so it may take some time to find yourself a perfect itinerary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late autumn, winter, &amp; early spring (November through March)<\/strong>: winters are fairly mild in Greece, so you won\u2019t have to worry about frigid temperatures, although rain is common and snow falls in the mountains. The upside of visiting Greece in winter is that you don&#8217;t have to worry about bumping elbows with countless tourists, and airfare and hotel rates are at their lowest. However, the downside is that many hotels, restaurants and attractions are closed, and ferry and flight\u00a0services are drastically cut back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also recommend this <a href=\"https:\/\/santorinidave.com\/best-time-to-visit-greece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, which provides detailed month by month information on the weather in the different regions of Greece (e.g. Athens, Northern &amp; Central Greece, the Peloponnese Peninsula, and the different Greek islands).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>HOW TO GET THERE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Greece receives numerous international <strong>flights<\/strong>\u00a0via its main airport,\u00a0Athens International Airport, which is the preferred point of entry in Greece when you want to visit Athens, explore the eastern part of the Peloponnese Peninsula, or tour the whole country. Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bandaranaike_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a continuously updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Athens.<\/p>\n<p>Although Athens International Airport is the main getaway for most visitors to Greece, it&#8217;s often easier to fly directly to\/from one of the Greek islands (or alternatively, book a multi-city ticket, arriving in one airport and leaving from another). The most popular Greek islands are connected by direct flights to Europe&#8217;s larger cities in the summer high season. So far, the Greek island are not served by non-European carriers, so if your starting point is America, Australia, Asia or Africa, the most cost-effective way to Greece may well be to fly to a major European hub and pick up an onward, connecting flight from there. The following islands are well connected to the European mainland (click the link for a continuously updated list of airlines that offer direct flights) :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crete: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chania_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chania International Airport<\/a> and\u00a0<a title=\"Heraklion International Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heraklion_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heraklion International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Kefalonia:\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Kefalonia Island International Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kefalonia_Island_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kefalonia Island International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Kos:\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Kos Island International Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kos_Island_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kos Island International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Rhodes:\u00a0<a title=\"Rhodes International Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhodes_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhodes Island International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Samos:\u00a0<a title=\"Samos International Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samos_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samos Island International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Santorini:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santorini_(Thira)_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santorini (Thira) International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Mykonos:\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mykonos Island National Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mykonos_Island_National_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mykonos Island National Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Zakynthos: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zakynthos_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zakynthos International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Corfu:\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corfu_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corfu Island International Airport<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before you buy your plane ticket to Greece, consider reading my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/how-to-book-a-flight\/\">tips &amp; tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket<\/a>\u00a0so that you can save a few bucks.<\/p>\n<p>Besides flying, it&#8217;s also possible to reach Greece by <strong>car<\/strong> or <strong>boat<\/strong>. Many people coming from Europe and Scandinavia drive or take a train to one of Italy&#8217;s coastal cities (e.g. Venice) where they can catch a ferry to Greece. Also, the cruise industry in Greece has exploded, with many international cruise companies now offering a stopover in Athens or one of the Greek islands during their Mediterranean Sea itineraries.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Requirements\u00a0for\u00a0entry\u00a0into Greece differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Greek\u00a0embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Greece.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Citizens of the European Union are required to present a valid ID for entry into Greece.<\/li>\n<li>Citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States, and allmost all non-E.U. countries are required to have a\u00a0valid passport\u00a0valid for at least 90 days beyond your intended date of departure.<\/li>\n<li>For stays longer than 90 days, all non-E.U. citizens will require a visa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure you read my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/2014\/02\/28\/10-tips-to-start-preparing-your-trip\/\">10 tips to plan a worry-free trip<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>GETTING AROUND<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It\u2019s quite easy to get around in Greece and its\u00a0sixty-plus inhabited isles, and several modes of transportation are available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ferries<\/strong> are the most common, cheapest, and most scenic way for inter-island travel. A wide variety of vessels sail Greek waters &#8211; ferries, catamarans or hydrofoils &#8211; and while some vessels are brand-new, others are old but can still feel pleasant enough if you stay on deck.\u00a0Ferry service (often accommodating vehicles) connects Athens (Piraeus) to several of the Greek island (Piraeus-Mykonos-Naxos-Santorini is one of the most popular routes) as well as the Italian mainland (e.g. Venice). There&#8217;s also ferry service between many of the islands (e.g. Crete and Rhodes), as well as service between the islands and the Turkish Riviera. In summer, ferries run frequently (and need to be booked in advance) but their schedule is reduced during shouder season and drasticaly cut back in winter season. I recommend this <a href=\"https:\/\/greeceferries.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> to search for schedules and book your ferry tickets online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Domestic flights<\/strong> (between the mainland and the islands) are relatively expensive, but can save literally days of travel: Athens\u2013Rhodes is just two hours by plane versus on full day and night by ferry. The following airlines offer domestic flights in Greece:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympicair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Olympic Air<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.aegeanair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aegean Air<\/a> (part of Star Alliance)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryanair.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryanair<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skyexpress.gr\/en-us\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sky Express<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Driving<\/strong> in Greece is a bit of an adventure (due to poor road conditions, the mountainous terrain, and reckless driving), but there&#8217;s no denying that it&#8217;s the best way to see the country at your own pace. Car-rental agencies are available throughout Greece, at all airports and on most of the larger town on the islands. Do bear in mind that Greece has one of the highest fatal\u00a0accident rates\u00a0in Europe (especially on the mainland).<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re traveling on a budget, you should consider\u00a0the bus for overland transport.\u00a0Greece has an extensive\u00a0<strong>long-distance bus service<\/strong>, with bus services on\u00a0major routes\u00a0being inexensive, efficient, and frequent but also very crowded.<\/li>\n<li>On the islands, renting\u00a0a <strong>scooter<\/strong> or motorbike is a very popular way to explore the stunning land- and seascapes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5><strong>INSPIRATION, HIGHLIGHTS &amp; TRAVEL TIPS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There are so many reasons why you should put Greece on top of your bucket list.
