These periods offer by far the easiest hiking conditions (for gorilla trekking) and the lowest malaria risk. The dry season does not necessarily means sunny season as\u00a0there is often a light cloud cover, which helps to moderate the temperatures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Rwanda<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u2019s long <strong>rainy season<\/strong> lasts from about\u00a0March to May, when the rain is heavy and persistent. This is by far the worst period of the year to visit the country as walking trails are extremely muddy. October to mid-December\u00a0is defined as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u2019s short rainy season, and during this time you may encounter occasional light showers, mainly in the afternoon.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u2019s rainy season has one advantage: it\u2019s the best season for spotting chimpanzees as they are easier to locate (in the dry season, when food is harder to find, the chimpanzees often withdraw far into the jungle\u2019s interior).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"how\"><strong>HOW TO GET THERE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Most travelers arrive in\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>\u00a0via Kigali International Airport, the<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0main gateway for all destinations in the country. More and more airlines now offer direct flights to\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Kigali<\/span>, including KLM, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>\u2019s national proud, its flagship carrier\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>ir.\u00a0Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kigali_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>\u00a0for a continuously updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Kigali.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">It\u2019s also possible to arrive in\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>\u00a0overland as part of a multi-country itinerary.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>\u00a0is bordered by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.\u00a0Visiting Congo and Burundi is off limits these days (due to\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">unpredictable security situation and the potential for violent civil unrest), but the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">land border crossings with Uganda and Tanzania are open and many tourists combine these countries with Rwanda in one single holiday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Before you buy a plane ticket, consider reading my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkeyalwan.net\/how-to-book-a-flight\/\">tips &amp; tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket<\/a>.<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"requirements\"><strong>TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Requirements\u00a0for\u00a0entry\u00a0into\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>\u00a0differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>n embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Rwanda.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\">You need a valid\u00a0<strong>passport<\/strong>.\u00a0The passport must be valid\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">for six months after\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">entry<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0into the country. Y<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ou need one blank page on your passport for entry stamps.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>You need a <strong>visa<\/strong> to enter\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">. 30 day tourist visas are available on arrival for $30 USD. The only gravel roads you\u2019ll encounter are those in the more remote areas or within the national parks.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">When you book a trip to\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>, you\u2019re most likely to do so via a tour operator that will arrange a\u00a0<b>driver<\/b>\u00a0who doubles as an informal guide. Most tourists in\u00a0<span class=\"mark9fiwmyvn7\" data-markjs=\"true\">Rwanda<\/span>\u00a0explore the country\u2019s three National Parks (Akagera, Volcanoes and Nyungwe) with a driver in a four-wheel drive vehicle. For my own travels, I used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uberluxesafaris.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Uber Luxe Safaris<\/a> and I was extremely happy with their service (I highly recommend them).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">If you are on a budget, you may consider public transport (e.g. privately run buses and\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">well-maintained, modern minibuses<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">),\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">which is more organized than elsewhere in East Africa, with regular, scheduled departures.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Most towns are small enough to negotiate by foot, but both Kigali and Butare sprawl over several steep hills &#8211; you\u2019ll need to catch a minibus or a taxi to get around.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>If you have money to burn, private flight and helicopter transfers are also available (and can be arranged via your tour operator or lodge).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 id=\"inspiration\"><strong>INSPIRATION, HIGHLIGHTS &amp;
