Today: Top 10 most luxurious ski hotels & lodges in the Alps

Winter is fast approaching, so it’s time to start planning your next ski getaway. And let’s hope that this season will be much better compared to the past winter seasons, which were marked by immense challenges as ski resorts around the world were grappling with the effects of climate change. The best place to spend a ski holiday remains the majestic Alps, which sprawl to almost one thousand miles (1600 km) stretching across five countries – Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The Alps offer some of the world’s best skiing, plus plenty of après-ski amenities, including Michelin-rated restaurants, over-the-top hotels and soothing spas to match. To help you plan your next winter holiday, I’ve compiled a list of my 10 favorite ski hotels, selected from across the Alps’ finest resorts & villages.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

Last summer, I enjoyed a terrific holiday in Peru. You can read my trip reports here:

Today:  Review of Titilaca Lodge (Lake Titicaca, Peru)

The mere mention of Lake Titicaca is enough to conjure up a dramatic, mysterious world. At an altitude of 3,812 meters (12,507ft) in the Andes, on the border between Peru and Bolivia, this cradle of Inca civilization is still home to one of the oldest communities in South America. Titilaka Lodge – Relais & Châteaux retreat – is tucked away in this unique landscape, totally off the beaten track on its own private peninsula, in a refurbished building. The rooms, each with a splendid lake view, are decorated in a contemporary style with touches of local heritage, in symbiosis with the luxuriant natural setting. Go beyond the magic of the lake and venture through ancient trails, acquaint yourself with traditional communities, and explore the Uros Floating Islands as part of the complimentary excursions.

Titilaca Lodge features in my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Peru.

Have you ever stayed at Titilaka? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Titilaka Lodge is the only luxury hotel on Lake Titicaca, the famous freshwater lake located on the border between Peru and Bolivia in the southern Andes. Located at 3,812 m or 12,506 ft above sea level, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world and the second largest lake in South America. Man-made islands and ancient ruins are just the beginning of Titicaca’s mystique, and the region’s deep, rich collection of cultures has turned it into one of Peru’s most exciting destinations. Taking a boat ride on this incredible body of water offers splendid views of the snow-capped Cordillera Real rising over the deep blue waters. The islands on the lake, as well as being very beautiful, provide a wonderful insight into the traditional life of the inhabitants, with many of these living in a similar fashion to their ancestors hundreds of years ago.
  • Titilaka is located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca, totally off the beaten track on a tranquil private peninsula shared only with the local Aymara community. Just outside the village of the same name, about a one hour drive from Puno (the lake’s largest city), Titilaka Lodge is surrounded on three sides by the pristine lake, offering fabulous panoramic views. The lodge faces the Taquile and Amantani islands to the north; the Bolivian Cordillera Real to the east, and Lake Titicaca stretching from east to west. At the northern tip of the peninsula lies the dock, departure point for local and excursion boats. The southern part of the peninsula, just a short stroll from the lodge, features a lovely sandy beach; although the waters of the lake are too cold for a swim, the lodge has a small activity center here, offering non-motorized water sports (e.g. kayak, paddle boarding, etc …).
  • Surrounded by stunning scenery and pristine geography, Titilaka Lodge is housed in a 3-story building. While simple and rather unremarkable on the outside, the lodge features light-filled, sophisticated and contemporary interiors. The hotel’s elegant decor playfully mixes local decorative design touches with a modern, urban architecture, and bursts with beautiful bespoke art works, high-end Peruvian textiles and recycled furniture. The open-plan ground floor features a reception area, several lounge areas, a small boutique and – the hotel’s piece de resistance – a magnificent dining room. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the lounge and dining areas give way to expansive outdoor terraces, equipped with shaded cabanas, lounge chairs and a Jacuzzi.
  • Titilaka Lodge offers 18 lake-view rooms, each with outstanding views of Lake Titicaca and contemporary furnishings complemented by local textiles and fresh flowers. Distributed over three levels and connected by central hallways, each room is fully equipped with pima cotton linens, extra pillows, heated floors, stocked mini-bar, i-pod dock, blackout curtains, organic bathroom amenities, coffee table, desk and ample closet space. The open plan bathrooms feature stand-alone bathtubs, walk-in showers and organic bathroom amenities. There are four room categories to choose from: the Explorer and Dawn Rooms all face the sunrise and come with uninterrupted lake views while the Dush Rooms have a view of the sunset and the countryside; the most expensive room type (Corner Room) boasts a view of both the sunrise and the sunset.
  • All food and drinks are included in the rate when staying at Titilaka Lodge. And although all-inclusive is often associated with a mediocre food concept, that’s not the case at Titilaka, which serves some of the best food in the whole region. Combining seasonal produce and honouring local heritage, the superb cuisine features traditional Andean Ingredients with a delicate twist showcasing the authentic essence of the lake. The menus – which change daily on a rotating basis – draw heavily on local cuisine and specialties like lake trout (there’s a trout farm only a five minute walk away) but also feature international options like salads, which are a bit of a rarity in the Andes. Although most guest will enjoy their meals in the lodge’s stunning main dining room, guests can also have their meals on one of the terraces, in their room (there’s no surcharge for room service) or during full-day outings with posh picnics.
  • CALTUR is the Peruvian government certification for tourism quality, which incorporates both environmental and social standards; Titilaka has qualified every year. The lodge keeps a low carbon footprint by using hydroelectric power and natural gas. The lodge also has a social commitment, which is focussed on supporting the sustainable economic development of the villages on Lake Titicaca. Three-quarters of our staff come from local communities and they source ingredients locally as much as possible, providing the families with an important market for their products, from food crops to Andean textiles. Titilaka also works hand in hand with a non-profit organisation that supports the communities around the lake, making a donation on behalf of every guest. Guests will also have a chance to give back personally by making their own donation or visiting a local village.
  • Titilaka Lodge bills itself as an ‘experience lodge’, offering a wide range of adventurous excursions led by bilingual expert guides. Guests can choose between 14 excursions in Peru and 2 into Bolivia (the latter come at an additional cost) to explore the region’s distinctive gastronomy, nature, history and culture. The not-to-be-missed boat excursion (the only speed boat activity offered) is to visit the floating reed islands of Uros and additional island Taquile, with a gourmet picnic lunch. Other excursions include a visit to traditional weaving artists, a kayak tour at sunrise, or spotting Aymara constellations after sunset. As a part of the lodge’s sustainability pledge, many excursions were set up in collaboration with the local communities, creating an authentic experience for our guests while providing the communities with a stable income. Excursions are arranged on a shared-basis, with the option to upgrade and privatize transfers and guiding
  • Just like its sister lodge Cirqa in Arequipa, Titilaka Lodge is a members of Relais & Châteaux. Founded in 1954, Relais & Châteaux is the premier designation for independent luxury restaurants and properties around the world. Today, the collection has grown to more than 580 landmark hotels and restaurants operated by independent owners around the globe who share a passion for providing guests the most unique and memorable experiences possible. In order to meet the exacting standards of Relais & Châteaux, each property or restaurant must pass a rigorous inspection process while at the same time express unique traits that value the ethos of the organization.
  • Titilaka is managed by Andean, the Peruvian luxury travel company who which largely sets the standard for high-end boutique stays throughout the country. As an industry pioneer in the design and development of owner-managed hotels and carefree travel, Andean takes guests on journeys from the historic vibrancy of the city to the timeless serenity of Peru’s unspoiled side. Each experience is complemented by seamless serendipity, remarkable local cuisine, nourishment for the soul, and an understated elegance that is uniquely Peruvian. Andean offers a neat circuit known as the Southern Peru Travesia: Arequipa, the Colca Canyona and Lake Titicaca. The company also has two hotels in Lima for a city stay before and after your international flights.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Titilaka Lodge’s 18 rooms are spread over three floors, which are connected by stairs (there’s no elevator). In case you have difficulties walking or are worried about climbing stairs, it’s advised to request a room on the ground floor.
  • The complimentary excursions are all shared with other guests unless you pick a private program, which comes at an extra charge. Also, the lodge offers the option of a day excursion in the nearby country of Bolovia, but this excursions comes at an extra charge since it involves a third-party tour operator and crossing the border.
  • Guests should be aware of altitude sickness when visiting Lake Titicaca. As the area is located at an altitude of 3,812 m or 12,506 ft above sea level, some travelers might encounter symptoms like headache, nausea, tiredness, and shortness of breath. However, Titilaka’s team is always able to assist and make you comfortable in case you would suffer from altitude sickness (oxygen can be provided when necessary).
  • Wellness & health facilities at Titilaka are limited, since there is no pool and no gym on site. However, the boutique property does offer a hot tub – located on a terrace just below the lobby – which is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. Also, there one spa room with two massage tables, and a few standard treatment offerings. Just note that the spa therapists come in from the city of Puno, so you’ll need to give at least a three hours’ notice when booking a treatment.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Although it is possible to visit Lake Titicaca any time of year, it’s advisable to travel between April and November, when most days offer clear and sunny weather, resulting in spectacular views.

HOW TO GET THERE

Titilaka provides shared transfers to and from the lodge. You can either fly into Juliaca Airport (approximately two hours from the lodge), you can arrive by train at Puno (one hour from the lodge), or arrive by private transfer (for example from Cuzco, Arequipa or the Colca Canyon).

Today: Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world

Is it possible to rank the world’s best beaches? Of course not, as preferences will differ from traveler to traveler, based on amenities, accessibility, swimming & water sports options, safety, sense of place, relaxation, and scenery. Nevertheless, being well-traveled and having put my feet in the sand of numerous beaches around the globe, I hereby present you my list of the 10 most spectacular beaches in the world. From coral to sandy and long to enclosed, it should come as no surprise that most of these beaches are located in the world’s best beach destinations. Unfortunately, these beaches are no secret (anymore) and you will have to share their incredible beauty with many others travelers. If tranquility is a must, you may consider swapping the beaches listed below for one of the world’s most beautiful (semi-)private hotel beaches or opt for a stay at one of the world’s most exclusive private island resorts.

There is more information below the slide show. Think I missed one? Share your favorite beach in the comments.

10. TULUM, RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO

What sets Tulum apart is its proximity to some of the most stunning Mayan ruins in all of Mexico: it is here that one of the world’s best cultural destinations meets one of the world’s best beaches. Tulum’s ruin is an ancient walled city sitting on rocky cliff that overlooks a spectacular beach. With hordes of tourists visiting every day, the area is not exactly private, but the broad stretch of white sand and mesmerizing turquoise Caribbean waters more than make up for it.

9. NAVAGIO BEACH, ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE

Navagio beach is an isolated yet strikingly beautiful sandy cove on the Greek island of Zakynthos. It is often referred to as the Shipwreck Beach because it is home to the wreck of a ship called Panagiotis that is believed to have been a smugglers ship. The area is defined by its sheer limestone cliffs, white sand beaches, and clear blue water, which attract thousands of tourists yearly. The strip of beach is accessed only by boat, but you can see it from above if you stand on the high side of the surrounding cliffs.

8. GRACE BAY, TURKS & CAICOS

The Turks and Caicos comprise 40 islands and cays, of which Providenciales is the main tourist centre. It’s here, on the northern shore, that you’ll find Grace Bay, a 19 km (12 mi) paradise-perfect mix of sugary sand and transparent water, fringed by a coral reef system with fabulous snorkeling and diving. Unfortunately, an increasing number of resorts and condo hotels have sprung up along the shore in recent years, so you may be better off these days on the more private hotel beaches of Amanyara or Parrot Cay.

7. WHITEHAVEN BEACH, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA

Whitehaven Beach is protected by the Whitsunday Islands National Park, and is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Australia’s most famous beach stretches for 4,4 miles (7 km) and is washed by swirls of turquoise, blue and green water. The sand is 98% pure white silica, which gives it a brilliant, near luminescent color. You can reach the beach via a helicopter or seaplane, or you can sail to Whitehaven Beach with one of the many yacht excursions in the area.

6. BAIA DO SANCHO, FERNANDO DE NORONHO, BRAZIL

Baio Do Sancho is situated on the remote island of Fernando de Noronha, an active volcanic archipelago of 21 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 220 miles (350 km) off the coast of northeastern Brazil bay.  Sparkling emerald water and soft white sands are surrounded by vegetation-covered 250 ft (75 m) cliffs. The beach can only be reached by boat or by foot on a dirt trail through a crack in a rock wall with a few dozen uneven, slippery-sandy steps. The beach is perfect for snorkeling and spotting rays.

5. LONG BEACH, VANCOUVER ISLAND, CANADA

It are not only tropical beaches whose breathtaking beauty can make one speechless. The best example is Long Beach, the longest sandy beach on Canada’s Vancouver Island, which offers eye-popping scenic views and an unmatched maritime wilderness. Located within the boundaries of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve between Tofino and Ucluelet, its 10 miles (16 km) of pristine sand are backed by lush rainforests and washed by a cool pounding surf. Twenty-thousand grey whales migrate up this coast each spring and summer.

4. MAYA BAY, KOH PHI PHI, THAILAND

Maya Bay is a stunningly beautiful, sheltered bay on Thailand’s Koh Phi Phi. With a ring of white sand surrounded by mangroves and towering limestone walls blanketed by dense foliage, it’s easy to see why director Danny Boyle chose this beach for cult-favorite The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The main beach within the bay is around 200 m (650 ft) long and features silky soft white sand, with underwater colorful coral and exotic fish in exceptionally clear water.

3. CAMPS BAY, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Cape Town tops my list of the world’s most beautiful cities, not least because of the magnificent beaches on its doorstep. Camps Bay is not only Cape Town’s most popular beach, but also the only urban beach to make it into my top 10 list. Boasting blinding white sand set against the majestic backdrop of the Twelve Apostles Mountain Range and Table Mountain, Camps Bay’s water is a bit cold, due to the currents in the Atlantic Ocean, but that will not distract you from the amazing surrounding scenery and world-famous sunsets.

2. POLIHALE BEACH, HAWAII, USA

Polihale is hands-down the Hawaiian archipelago’s most breathtakingly beautiful beach.  This seemingly deserted 11 km (7 mi) stretch on the western end of Kauai, one of the world’s most scenic islands, is several miles from the nearest town and holds a vibe of enchantment and mystique, still alive on Hawaii today. The beach can only be reached via a poorly marked, dirt sugarcane road, making a four-wheel drive vehicle preferable (check with your rental car company for restrictions before heading out).

1. ANSE SOURCE D’ARGENT, SEYCHELLES

One of the most photographed beaches in the world, the blinding white sands of Anse Source d’Argent unfurl across La Digue, one of the 115 island that make us this paradisiacal archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The beach sparkles against a backdrop of enormous granite boulders, worn by time and weather. An offshore reef provides protection from ocean waves, making the turquoise water an ideal spot for swimming. Keep an eye out for endangered birds and giant tortoises!

Today: Beond Airlines celebrates its first anniversary with an attractive offer

Beond Airlines – the world’s first premium leisure airline, celebrated this week its first anniversary. Launched in 2023, Beond is a Maldives based carrier founded by former Lufthansa managers, an investor from Dubai and a Maldivian hospitality group. The airline currently flies with all-Business-Class narrow-body Airbus aircraft – with seats arranged in a 2-2 layout – between the Maldives and Zürich, Munich, Milan, Rhiyad, and Dubai. Beond Airlines aims to grow its fleet to more than 30 Airbus A320s within five years to fly to 60 destinations around the globe. I flew with Beond – which markets itself as “Be0nd” – last year and you can read my review here (with pros & cons).

“This is only the beginning of beOnd, and we are proud of our track record to date,” said Tero Taskila, CEO of beOnd. “Our goal this year has been to exceed every expectation of our customers from the moment they book with us until they arrive in the Maldives, and we have achieved that. We are focused on growth in the market and ensuring the trust of our customers and partners as we do so.” Beond has served more than 8,000 customers since its launch last year and the carrier has maintained its vision of affordable luxury, offering attractive fares at around €3,000 roundtrip, including taxes and fees.

Since I flew with them, some good changes seem to have happened with Beond Airlines:

  • The Maldivian carrier features now two Airbus aircraft (instead of one), featuring premium lay-flat seating and luxurious onboard amenities. The aircraft — two specially designed Airbus A319 seating 44 passengers and A321 seating 68 passengers in stunning hand-painted dark charcoal and copper livery — incorporates many elements of Italian design. For example, the plush white leather seats feature leather from Poltrona Frau, a renowned furniture and automotive designer founded in 1912. The seats were designed by Optimares, a leading aircraft seat designer and manufacturer, also based in Italy.
  • Beond is unreliable when it comes to its flight schedule (which is a huge problem). The carrier cancelled many flights during its launch phase due to low occupancy. It happened to me as well: two weeks prior to my departure to the Maldives last year, I was informed that my return flight to Munich was cancelled (since Munich was downgraded from a permanent to a seasonal destination). But the carrier now seems to be dealing with this problem by having introduced the “Free Flight Guarantee”, industry-first initiative:
    • In the event of a flight disruption, Beond will rebook passengers in Business Class with a different carrier, and offers refunds or exchanges for other eventualities.
    • If rebooking in Business Class isn’t available with partner airlines, Beond will rebook passengers in Economy Class and provide a 100% refund on the cancelled sector.
    • If you prefer to reschedule your flight instead instead of a rebooking, Beond will exchange the value of the cancelled flight for a travel voucher with an additional 20% value, valid for one year from issuance.
  • Ansett Aviation Training is now providing training for Beond’s flight crew members, underscoring the carrier’s commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards. With Ansett Aviation Training’s state-of-the-art pilot training facilities and expertise, Beond’s crew will receive extensive training at Ansett’s network of training centers, including the Dubai South facility.
  • The airline has a began a successful charter business, transporting celebrities and sports teams, such as the Norwegian football team and the Al Ahli Football Club. While charter operations are not Beond’s focus, the offer has apparently resonated in the marketplace.
  • Beond not only flies to the Maldives, but now also serves the Zurich (Switzerland) to Dubai route, as part of Fifth Freedom authority granted between the respective aviation authorities.
  • Beond has replaced the traditional paper boarding pass by exclusive boarding tags designed to resemble stylish luggage tags. Made from high-quality, durable materials and customized with each passenger’s details, these boarding tags are not only practical but also double as a bespoke souvenir from each journey and they  reflect the airline’s commitment to providing a luxury experience at every touchpoint.

To celebrate its first anniversary – which coincided with Black Friday – Beond has launched a very attractive offer, called “BeOnd’s Golden Friday”, offering 25% off all flights and the chance to win a Golden Ticket—a complimentary return flight for future travel for every 50th issued booking:

  • How To Book: flybeond.com with promo code GOLDENFRIDAY24
  • Booking Period: Until 30 November 2024
  • Travel Period: Until 28 March 2026

The post Review: Puqio Hotel (Colca Canyon, Peru) appeared first on the Luxury Travel Expert.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

Last summer, I enjoyed a terrific holiday in Peru. You can read my trip reports here:

Today:  Review of Puqio Hotel (Colca Canyon, Peru)

Puqio, a luxury tented camp nestled deep in Peru’s captivating Colca Valley, offers an extraordinary retreat that celebrates the simplicity and beauty of nature. The tented camp invites you to slow down, embrace the Andean-style exploration, and immerse yourself in the surrounding landscape and local traditions. Three distinct room categories – Pirca, Carpa, and Carpa Refugio – offer alternative ways to experience the valley with distinct views of the surrounding terrain.  Gastronomic experience include sauthentic Andean flavors prepared in clay ovens and over open flames. Fuming volcanoes, sweeping grasslands, and untrodden pathways await daily exploration. At night, rustic elegance rejuvenates body and spirit of the experienced traveler.

Puqio features in my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Peru.

Have you ever stayed at Puqio? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Puqio is a peaceful exploration camp located near Peru’s third most visited tourist destination, the Colca Canyon. The Colca Canyon is known as one of the deepest canyons in the world, reaching a maximum depth of around 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) from the rim of the Canyon to the bottom of the valley (twice the depth of the Grand Canyon). The main draw of the Canyon are its viewpoints, scenic hikes and hot springs. The Colca Canyon is a privileged vantage point from which to observe the majestic Andean condor; with a wingspan of over 3 meters (10 feet), the Andean Condor is considered the largest flying bird in the world.
  • The Colca Valley is a 3 hour drive from the city of Arequipa (private transfers can be arranged by the hotel). The drive from Arequipa to Puqio is pleasant, scenic journey and offers a chance to appreciate the beautiful high- altitude landscapes of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. Several active volcanoes can be seen along the way and large herds of beautiful alpacas and vicunas are frequently spotted by the side of the road. Several stops are made along the way, including a stop at the Patapampa pass (4910 m, 16,108 ft), which is surrounded by the peaks of the three impressive volcanoes Ampato, Sabancayo y Hualca-Hualca.
  • Puqio is nestled on a hillslope in a tranquil corner of the Colca Valley, about a 45 min drive from the canyon’s most famous viewpoints.  The area around Puqio is dotted with small, picturesque villages – such as Chivay, Yanque and Cabanaconde  – that seem to be stuck in time. These village were founded in Spanish colonial times and are still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. The local people of these villages maintain their ancestral traditions – for example, women are still dressed in elaborately adorned traditional skirts  – and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces – called andenes – on the surrounding mountains.
  • Puqio is a small boutique hotel and in many ways, it feels more like a rural Peruvian casitas than a true hotel, all adding to a sense of place in this remote corner of Peru. The main pavilion of Puqio houses a dining room, a couple of seating areas centered coffee tables, and an open fire. The front terrace of the pavilion houses an open-air dining areas that is used for traditional barbeque dinners, while the backside features and expansive terrace with some lounge chair from where to soak in the views and the sunset. Beyond the main pavilions are the eight rooms – four tents and four adobe huts – which are scattered throughout the resort grounds (more on that below).
  • Puqio offers only eight rustic yet elegant rooms, hosting just 16 travelers at a time. There are three room categories to choose from: Pirca, Carpa & Carpa Refugio. The two carpa rooms are spacious tents offering outdoor terraces, woodburning stoves, an outdoor bathtub, and both indoor & outdoor showers. Inspired by the original canvas tents of first Andean explorers, each is crafted with rugged canvas to protect guestss from the elements. The two carpa refugios are the most commanding of the canvas tents, each boasting a sizable indoor living area and terrace, a wood-burning stove, and a separate mud room. The four pirqa rooms are housed in adobe huts and offer the same amenities as the carpa tents as well as the best views of the valley.
  • Rates at Puqio are fully inclusive, including lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner with wine and cocktails, afternoon tea, drinks and in-room snacks. Food at the lodge is delicious and the portions are generous. Here, corn is harvested by local hands and freshly baked bread is kneaded with a knowing touch. Each family-style meal is crafted using traditional methods and the freshest produce available in the local terroir, creating a completely authentic and inspired culinary offering. Some dining experiences at Puqio feature meals cooked in clay ovens and open flames, highlighting the traditions of the Andes. This is farm-to-table dining, Andean style, at its best. Plus, with no menus, family-style servings remind each guest of the rich simplicity of living from the land.
  • Set in a quiet, unexplored corner of the famous Andean valley, Puqio is an exploration hub offering its guests immersive excursions that capture the essence and mysticism of the magnificent Colca Canyon, a must-see destination in Southern Peru. The lodge offers multiple excursions to the canyon’s viewpoints and the condor lookout, in varying durations, as well as shorter activities around the tented camp. A guests exploration will vary depending on their preferences. Favorite experiences include horseback riding, soaking in the local hot springs, and visiting some of the best textile weavers in the Andes. Guests can also visit the charming towns of Sibayo, Tutti, and Chivay.
  • Cirqa is managed by Andean, the Peruvian luxury travel company who reinvents the art of travel in the country by showcasing the true essence of Peru through inspiring destinations, innovative accommodations, and authentic experiences. Andean manages three other hotels, offering a neat circuit known as the Southern Peru Travesia: Lima, Arequipa, the Colca Canyona and Lake Titicaca.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Wellness facilities at Puqio are limited. There is no pool, no gym and no spa (although I was informed that the Andean management is considering adding a spa facility in the near future). However, the boutique property does offer a hot tub, which is located on a terrace just below the main property, boasting some lovely views of the Colca Valley (including views of the sunset). It’s a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing.
  • Travelers should be aware of altitude sickness when visiting Puqio and the Colca Canyon. As the area is located at elevations greater than 10,000 ft (3.000 m), some travelers might encounter symptoms like headache, nausea, tiredness, and shortness of breath. However, Puqio’s team is always able to assist  and make you comfortable in case you would suffer from altitude sickness.
  • Puqio is located in the Colca Valley, which is a 45 min drive from the Colca Canyon and its spectacular view points. Although the lodge does offer excursions to the view points, it currently does not offer the option of hiking within the canyon itself (which is the main draw for many visitors to this part of Peru). I was able to arrange a hike by myself though: a taxi picked me up at 6 am at Puqio and brough me to the the village of  Cabanaconde (after watching the condors at the view point), from where I started a non-guide, 5-hour hike to Llahuar on the bottom of the Colca Canyon. Here, the same taxi company arranged a 4×4 to pick me up and take me back to the lodge (a 90 min drive), where I arrived again at 6 pm. I would suggest that Puqio would try to include these type of hikes in its future excursion program (by collaborating with locals), since it’s an activity that many travelers might be interested in.
  • Puqio features only 8 rooms (4 adobe huts and 4 tents). The four adobe huts (pirca rooms) and two of the tents (carpa refugio) are located on the front row of the hillslope, offering spectacular views of the valley, especially during the sunset. However, the two other tents (carpa) are a bit set back and, and they do not enjoy a view of the valley, but rather look out over the resort grounds and the other accommodations. If a view is what you are after, make sure to book a pirca or a capra refugio.

MY VERDICT
  • Location: 8/10
  • Design: 8/10
  • Pool: n/a
  • Rooms: 8/10
  • Food: 9/10
  • Breakfast:9 /10
  • Spa: n/a

Today: A travel guide to Peru

My travel blog features a section that comprises a selection of destination & travel guides. You can find these travel guides under ‘destinations‘ in the blog’s header menu (indicated by the blue arrow in the screenshot below).

I hope these online travel guides – based on my own travel experiences – may help you to get the most out of your (luxury) trips. So far, I have published travel guides on the following destinations:

Today, I am publishing a travel guide on my blog about Peru.

Peru’s incredible landscapes, delicious gastronomy, and pre-Columbian history entice travelers around the world. From the snowcapped peaks of the Andes and the lush Amazon Rainforest to Inca ruins and Spanish colonial mansions, Peru beckons with the allure of the ancient and mysterious. The country is home to some of the most iconic sites in South America: the legendary ruins of Machu Picchu, the highest navigable lake in the world (Lake Titicaca), one of the world’s deepest canyons (Colca Canyon), the Nazca Lines, and the Amazon rain forest. But whether you want to explore these famous sites or venture off the beaten track, any holiday to Peru offers dramatic scenery, rich culture, and world-class cuisine. Peru is also home to a string of luxury hotels and internationally celebrated restaurants, attracting discerning travelers from all over the world.

Get the most out of your (luxury) trip to Peru with my travel guide. Find out more about:

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: BEST TIME TO VISIT

The presence of the Andes mountain range and its rugged geography make Peru a country with great climatic diversity.

The Andes

The best time to visit the Peruvian Andes is during the dry season, between the months of May and October. During this time, the weather is sunny and dry, with warm days and chilly nights. It is a wonderful time to be in Peru, especially if you plan to go on a (multi-day) hike but being the peak season, early booking is crucial to avoid disappointment. Those wishing to travel in July and August (the peak tourist season) should start planning their holiday six to nine months in advance.

Visitors will notice more rain and clouds between November and April, with the wettest months being January and February. Travel at this time does offer the advantage of fewer visitors, greener scenery, and some lower rates for flights and hotels. However, the rains can also make hiking and exploring more difficult (with often obscured views at Machu Picchu). Landslides, disrupted train schedules, flight delays and road closures can also occur during rainy spells, which can disrupt your travel plans.

The Amazon

Like the Andes, the Amazon has two well-defined seasons: the rainy season (November – March) with abundant precipitation, and the low-rainfall season (April – October), ideal for visiting. The humidity is very high throughout the year.  The rainy season in the Amazon should not deter you from visiting — the flora and fauna will still be abundant and there are always breaks in showers.

The Coast

The Peruvian capital Lima has its own micro-climate. Nine months of the year, Lima is covered with a blanket of dense fog as the moisture makes its way inland from the ocean to the rain forests. This can include morning fog almost daily, and week-long stretches of overcast skies, mainly on the hilltops or at high altitude. In summer, there is little fog.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Foreign nationals who wish to enter and/or leave Peruvian territory must present the following:

  • Travelers from most countries do not need a Peruvian tourist visa.
  • They need a passport legitimately issued by a country with a minimum validity of six months from the date of entry into the country.
  • The maximum length of stay that the authorities grant is 183 days, which cannot be extended.

Please keep in mind that while a visa is not required, you must:

  • Hold a passport valid at least six months on entry with one blank visa page
  • Hold proof of onward/return flights
  • Hold proof of sufficient funds relative to your intended length of stay
  • Hold documents showing proof of purpose of trip
  • Hold all documents required for the next destination
  • Confirm with your airline that boarding will be permitted without a visa

Please note this information serves as a guide only. Travelers should check for visa requirements pertaining to their citizenship, as entry requirements can vary.

Make sure you read my 10 tips to plan a worry-free trip.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: HOW TO GET THERE

Travelers typically arrive in Peru by flying into the capital Lima and then take other forms of transportation – shuttles or domestic flights, for example – to other cities (Cusco, Arequipa). Nearly all flights from North & South America, Asia and Europe land at Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport, a fairly modern airport with a variety of services, including ATMs, currency exchange, banks, post office, restaurants, and duty-free shops. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to San Jose.

You can also enter Peru by land (via bus or car) via one of the 10 border crossings that Peru shares with the surrounding countries of Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The crossings are open year-round and the process is fairly straightforward as long as you are in the possession of the necessary entry documents.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: HOW TO GET AROUND

Getting around Peru is fairly safe, comfortable and easy, but it has its challenges and may consume a lot of tume.

  • Domestic flights  in Peru are quite affordable and can help save time  (I recommend to take flights instead of bus journeys wherever possible). Most internal flights in Peru only take 1 hour. There are 200 airports (including airfields and airports), with 5 international and 18 domestic terminals. The main airports are located in Lima, Cusco, Puno, Arequipa, Iquitos and Trujillo. The main domestic airlines in Peru are LATAMStar Perú, and Sky Airline.
  • The privatised rail system run by Perurail has chartered tourist services between Cusco & Aguas Calientes (gateway to Machu Picchu), Cusco & Puno and Puno & Arequipa.  Tickets are available from PeruRail or InkaRail. You can choose between normal trains and panorama window trains that offer a more comfortable experience with a show on board. On top of this, PeruRail also operates three luxury trains (with come with onboard shows, dinners and more):
    • The legendary Belmond Hiram Bingham train, which carries the name of the American explorer who discovered Machu Picchu again, offers a luxurious adventure that combines fine dining, great service, and breathtaking views as you travel through Peru’s fascinating landscapes from Cusco to Machu Picchu.
    • Over the course of two days and two nights, the Belmond Andean Explorer’s beautiful itinerary passes through some of Peru’s most breathtaking landscapes, namely Cusco, Puno (Lake Titicaca) and Arequipa. You’ll travel across the impressive Andean mountains, through snow-capped peaks, historic sites, and colorful valleys.
    • The Titicaca Train – another luxury train operated by Peru Rail – traverse the scenic route from Cusco to Puno in approximately 10 hours, embracing panoramic views of the Altiplano.
  • Bus travel is very popular in Peru, and you can usually buy your tickets the day before or even the day of travel. The main roads in Peru are in very good condition, monitored by specialized police, and have emergency services for quick assistance. Major companies run on schedule and often have both daytime and overnight options.  There is a wide variety of buses that connect almost all destinations in the country and offer differentiated services:
    • Local buses are very popular among Peruvians, so they’re always crammed full and there’s no reserved seating. They also make a lot of stops along the way, so they are considerably slower than the express buses.
    • Express buses are more comfortable: they are an air-conditioned , there’s a toilet on board and snacks (tea, coffee, crackers) are served during the trip.
    • Royal Class overnight buses are the most luxurious option when it comes to bus travel and they come with reclining chairs for enhanced sleep comfort.
  • The Peruvian Amazon is a special part of South America’s largest jungle and the only way to access most of it is by boat. You can fly into a few towns and most travelers start their trip to the jungle by flying to either Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado. From there, all travel will be by boat on tributaries of the Amazon River. There are many local and international companies that organize jungle tours and visits to lodges.
  • If a bus or plane sounds too public for you or you don’t find a time schedule that fits your itinerary, it also possible to book private transfers with a chauffeur-driven car via most hotels at often reasonable prices.

Before you buy a plane ticket, consider reading my tips & tricks for buying the cheapest plane ticket.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: RECOMMENDED TOUR OPERATORS

Although it’s perfectly possible to plan and organize a trip to Peru on your own, some  discerning travelers may prefer to book (part of) their trip in Peru through a travel company. The latter will take care of all the transfers, activities and hotels. I highly recommend the following luxury travel companies in Peru:

  •  Andean is a Peruvian luxury travel company who reinvents the art of travel in the country by showcasing the true essence of Peru through inspiring destinations, innovative accommodations, and authentic experiences. Andean manages 5 hotels hotels, offering a neat circuit known as the Southern Peru Travesia, which includes Lima, Arequipa, the Colca Canyona and Lake Titicaca.
  • Explora is one of the most luxurious hotel brands in South America, managing a collection of lodges focused on deep exploration of remote regions. Explora’s lodges are designed to offer comfort while connecting guests to some of the continent’s most awe-inspiring landscapes. Each property emphasizes sustainable practices and provides guided explorations, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the natural and cultural richness of the area. Explora has a limited footprint in Peru and operates just one lodge in the Sacred Valley (the  gateway to Machu Picchu). When touring the entire country, consider combining Andean for the Southern Peru Travesia and Explora for the Sacred Valley.
  • The Belmond Hotel Group – fomerly known as Orient Express until its rebranding in 2014 – operates several hotels and trains and offers the most complete tour of Peru (with properties in Lima, the Colca Canyon, Cusco, Sacred Valley and the only lodge near Machu Picchu). In 2018, Belmond – which ranks among the most exclusive hotel brands in the world – was acquired by LVMH (‘Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy’), the owner of brands like Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Fendi. With Belmond, you can stay in timeless hotels in Venice, Rio and St. Petersburg, embrace the spirit of adventure at Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat, glide along the rails through the Swiss Alps, soar across the Andes, or explore the mystifying rivers of Myanmar.
  • When traveling to the Peruvian Amazon, I highly recommend Aqua Expeditions, which offers luxury Amazon River cruises, offering 3, 4 and 7 night river cruises aboard the luxury Aria Amazon & Aqua Nera.
  • If you consider doing the Inca trek to Machu Picchu, I highly recommend Evolutions Trek Peru. This Cusco-based company focusses on fair trade tourism, empowering women, ethical traveling, and sustainable and eco-friendly practices. Evolutions Trek Peru offers several activities and hikes in the Sacred Valley, including the Inca Trail, with varying durations and levels of comfort, including luxury camping trips.

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: INSPIRATION, HIGHLIGHTS & TRAVEL TIPS

There are many reasons why Peru should be on your bucket list:

  • Peru is a cultural enthusiast’s dream. Home to the iconic Incan remnants of Machu Picchu, historic Cusco and the glorious Sacred Valley, as well as the mystical Nazca Lines, Peru is a veritable nirvana for cultural and history aficionados. What’s more, this multicultural country, rich in tradition, too serves up a wide mix of merriments and sacred religious events, with music and dance playing an integral role, celebrating over 3 000 festivals each year. Highlights on the calendar include Corpus Christi and Qoyllur Riti.
  • Peru is a nature lover’s paradise. Unparalleled with its biodiversity and natural wonders, plus its medley of landscapes and a vast array of bird and wildlife, not to mention hectares of protected parks and reserves, outdoor fanatics are spoilt for choice, with fantastic explorations of the emerald jungles of the Amazon, journeys to the world’s second deepest canyon, Colca, and visits to ‘the birthplace of the sun’, Lake Titicaca, featuring as unmissable highlights. In the Peruvian Amazon and Andes alone, there is no fewer than 13 monkey species, 1 000 bird species, 200 mammal species as well as 4 000 vibrant butterfly species. Turquoise lagoons, glaciers, and mystical archaeological ruins complete Peru’s enchanting natural offering.
  • Peru is a hot post for foodies. Serving five stars on the global gastronomy stage, epicureans flock to Peru’s cosmopolitan Lima, renowned as South America’s food capital, to immerse themselves in the capital city’s grand colonial architecture, whilst taunting their taste buds with mouth-watering dishes, influenced by local, Spanish, African and Asian flavours. A visit is not complete without tasting Peru’s signature plate, the classic ceviche. An elegant cured raw fish dish traditionally served cold, a true celebration of the Pacific Ocean with every bite, it’s no surprise this is Peru’s most popular delicacy.
  • Peru is also known as an incredible adventure sports destination, enjoy a huge selection of activities ranging from hiking, canopy treks, mountain biking and horseback riding trails, to the more edgy options of whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, zip-lining and rock climbing. Hop on a motorised quad-bike, kayak or paddle-board or go catch-and-release fishing in the Northern Amazon.

The following, detailed articles may also inspire you and help you plan your holiday to Peru:

TRAVEL GUIDE TO PERU: SUGGESTED ITINERARIES

It’s impossible to suggest one itinerary for Peru in this travel guide, but I hereby share with you a schedule based on my own holiday in Peru. Because of the amount of effort involved in getting around in Peru and the number of destinations worth visiting, it is recommended that travelers set aside  two weeks for their Peru holiday.

  • Day 1 & 2: arrival in Lima & explore the city (try to book a table at Central, one of the world’s best restaurants).
    • Recommended Hotel: Fausto, Belmond
  • Day 2 & 3: take a flight to Arequipa and explore the city
    • Recommended hotel: Cirqa
  • Day 4 & 5: explore the Colca Canyon
    • Recommended hotel: Puqio, Belmond
  • Day 6 & 7: Visit Lake Titicaca
    • Recommended hotel: Titilaca
  • Day 8 & 9: take the train or fly to Cusco & explore the city
    • Recommended hotel: Belmond
  • Day 10, 11, 12 & 13: explore the Sacred Valley (+ day visit to Machu Picchu)
    • Recommended hotel: Explora Valle Sagrado
  • Day 14: flight back home (with departure from Cusco)

Some remarks:

  • If you are short on time, I would limit your stay to Lima and Arequipa to one night each (but make sure to arrive in Arequipa in the morning so you have enough time to explore the city).
  • When you book the Southern Peru Travesia with Andean, transfers between Arequipa, the Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca will be by private van (included in the rate). When you book via Belmond, the transfer between Arequipa, Laka Titicaca and Cusco will be by luxury train (and needs to be booked separately).
  • Most hotels in Peru’s Sacred Valley offer day trips to Machu Picchu. However, keep in mind that a day trip to Machu Picchu from a Sacred Valley Hotel takes a lot of  travel time. Between the car ride from the hotel to Ollantaytambo train station, the train ride to Aguas Calientes and the bus ride to the legendary citadel at the end, it’s at least 4 hours each way (and that excludes waiting lines for the busses). If you instead stay in Agua Calientes (or if you really want to splurge, at the Belmond property at the entrance to Machu Picchu), you could visit Machu Picchu early morning (before all the crowds arrive by train) or late afternoon, and break up the travel. In this scenario, I would suggest to stay only 3 nights in the Sacred Valley, followed by 2 nights around Machu Picchu.
  • If you have more time, you could consider doing the Inca trek to Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail is one the bucket list of many travelers, not only for the sense of achievement but also because it immerses you in stunning Andean landscapes from cloud forest to rainforest and passes a handful of other Inca ruins. The 43 km (27 mi) hike begins in Chillca, just west of Ollantaytambo, and takes three to four days, camping every night. A maximum of 500 permits are issued for the Inca Trail each day, over half of which are taken up by guides, and the porters who lug baggage, as well as tents, food and even tables and benches, up some incredibly steep paths. Note that the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is closed for the entire month of February every year for maintenance and that the 500 daily permits can sell out months in advance, especially for the peak months of July and August.
  • If you have more time, you should also consider visiting the Peruvian Amazon. With daily direct flights to and from the Peruvian capital of Lima, guests can easily get to Iquitos, the gateway to the Amazon in Peru and starting point of luxury cruises on the Amazon River. Fun fact: Iquitos is the largest inland port in the world only accessible by river and air.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

Last summer, I enjoyed a terrific holiday in Peru. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Hotel Cirqa (Arequipa, Peru)

Cirqa – a Relaix & Chateaux Hotel – echoes the wonders of 1540 — the year in which Arequipa was founded — and magnificently celebrates the city’s immaculate white sheen. This recently restored former monastery embodies Arequipa’s traditional architecture by flaunting its original sillar volcanic rock walls, which were carefully sculpted by local stonemasons. The captivating decor adds a modern touch, creating a unique balance between the past and present. The eleven rooms, some with restored vaulted ceilings, surround the main terraza & patio.  At the hotel’s Salón, the cuisine is an innovative reinterpretation of the region’s gastronomic soul and iconic picanterías, and can be enjoyed while admiring the prodigious lunar landscapes that surround this delectable haven of peace. Cirqa is not simply a place to stay; it is a memory in and of itself.

Cirqa features in my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Peru.

Have you ever stayed at Cirqa? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Cirqa Hotel is located in the center of Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa, often referred to as the ‘White City’. Arequipa may not get as much international attention as Lima, Cuzco or Machu Picchu, but it is a stunning destination in itself. More than 500 grand colonial-era houses in the historic center – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – take visitors back to another time, to the earliest beginnings of the fusion between European and Andean traditions, as expressed in the city’s vaulted roofs and arches of white stone, made from the local volcanic rock known as “sillar”. The historic center of Arequipa also houses dozens of traditional restaurants, or “picanterías”, where stone mortars and clay pots are used to prepare the finest stuffed peppers and shrimp chowder. Cirqa Hotel is just one block from Arequipa’s main square, Plaza de Armas, so the property is perfectly located for sightseeing.
  • Cirqa is housed in a historic building – a former monastery – which was founded in the same year as the city of Arequipa, 1940. It was then that Alonso De Luque, a renowned scribe, and his wife Isabel de Vega Sarmiento became the first documented owners of the land on which Cirqa now sits. The pair never developed this land, and left it to the Augustinean Order upon their passing, on the condition the Order build a church with cloisters, patios, orchards and gardens as well an altar for Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. The Order did fulfil this request, however construction was fated to become a centuries-long process of rebuilding and restyling as successive earthquakes left their marks on the monastery from 1582 through the late 1800’s. Peru’s independence from Spain in 1826 marked a significant divergence from the previously-clear trail of ownership and the property was handed over to the treasury and split into thirds for separate families and private ownership. Today, two thirds of the original property correspond to Cirqa.
  • Tales of grand celebrations, whispered conspiracies, blessed fates and opulent fortunes still echo through the historic hallways of Cirqa’s 16th century building. The  property – which was among the first built by European settlers in the New World – boasts a unique Arequipenean character that has withstood the test of time. Most of the original volcanic rock architecture was preserved during the renovation and transformation of the former monastery into a hotel, while local materials like dark wood, iron elements, lots of glass and mirrors were added. The meticulously restored high-vaulted ceilings, powerful walls, arches and columns were further infused with contemporary fixtures and fittings, making up the soul of the hotel. The team behind the hotel’s astounding design & architecture are owner Ignacio Masias, designer Sandra Masias, and architects Stephanie Chang and Daniel Cisneros. They choose the name CIRQA, with a Q, to honor the history of the property in tandem with the history and chronology of Arequipa itself
  • Cirqa Hotel features 11 exquisite rooms, centered around the hotel’s main terraza and patio. Each room embodies is a timeless homage to the ancient monastery chambers & features its own unique characteristics in addition to sophisticated modern details. All rooms include a Smart TV with DirecTV & Netflix, air-conditioning, a wireless speaker, organic amenities, & a complimentary snacks-and-drinks hamper. During my visit at Cirqa, I stayed in the Boveda Room, a magnificent and spacious bedroom, with original high-vaulted ceilings that recalled ancient Parador times. The room was uniquely outfitted with sculptural wooden furnishings, linens in earthy hues, contemporary fixtures, and a private sitting area. The open-plan ensuite bathroom featured a stand-alone bathtub, a cabin with a walk-in shower and a lavatory. The room’s architectural highlight were the large glass windows that had been inserted into the century-old arches, creating an atmosphere of old-world tranquility.
  • Cirqa is a small boutique property, and it encourages its guests to explore the city of Arequipa and its surrounding. Nonetheless, the hotel also features some beautiful communal areas in case you’d like to spend some relaxing moments at the hotel itself, perhaps after a day of exploring the city center. At the heart of the hotel is a lovely patio with a small heated plunge pool (which is open from sunrise to sunset). Right next to the patio is a beautiful spa room with a vaulted ceiling, where treatments can be offered by skilled therapists upon request. One of the hotel’s highlights is its rooftop terrace which offers stunning views of Arequipa’s volcanoes & the surrounding neighbourhoods -great for sundowners. Inspired by old Picanterias, the rooftop terrace’s design resembles the structure of the first Arequipenean road-stops, where travelers from all around would gather to drink and eat traditional food before continuing on to their destinations.
  • Breakfast, lunch, & dinner are served in Cirqa’s sole restaurant, which comprises an indoor dining room (called The Salón) and an outdoor shaded terrace (called The Terraza). The contemporary Salón combines a casual sitting area with a monastic dining room and a large fireplace. Its décor is complemented by long tables and carefully selected tableware that create an organic aesthetic and tranquil ambiance. The Terraza offers an open space sitting & dining area with a comfortable feel & fire pits. Both are available for guests or walk-ins who have made prior reservations. The restaurant’s chef – Maria Fé García – pays tribute to her grandmother’s recipes while intermingling definitive flavors into the dishes. With rocotitos rellenos and adobo de cerdo leading the way, she offers Arequipenean takes on foodie favorites like squid ink pasta, salmon, and even mille-feuille for dessert.
  • Cirqa is one of the newest members of Relais & Châteaux in South America.
  • Cirqa is managed by Andean, the Peruvian luxury travel company who reinvents the art of travel in the country by showcasing the true essence of Peru through inspiring destinations, innovative accommodations, and authentic experiences. Andean manages three other hotels, offering a neat circuit known as the Southern Peru Travesia: Lima, Arequipa, the Colca Canyona and Lake Titicaca.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Cirqa is a magnificent boutique hotel with only 18 rooms. No two rooms are alike, due to the fact that the architects had to work within the constraint of existing structures in the heritage monastery building. Beware that some of the rooms are small and  lack outdoor windows (except for a windowed entrance door). But no matter what room type you book, all rooms are ancredibly atmospheric, with a stunning fusion of old and new, of stone, steel and glass.
  • Cirqa features limited facilities, with just one restaurant, a beautiful Jacuzzi and one spa room on site.  However, it all fits the boutique character of the hotel as the excitement to stay at Cirqa isn’t perhaps about the facilities offered by the hotel, but about the hotel itself. The main draw of Cirqa are the sensitive reinvention of its past as a monastery, the beautifully designed rooms, the impeccable service and the calm and serene ambiance, even though the hotel located right in the center of bustling Arequipa.

10. BE A FOODIE IN LIMA

Lima is also home to several restaurants that rank among The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, with Central (managed by Chef Virgilio Martínez and his wife Pía León) being the most famous venue. Last year, Central made history by becoming the first venue in South America to take the ultimate culinary crown and be named The World’s Best Restaurant. Read my review of Central Restaurant here.

9. BOOK AN EXCURSION TO THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

When we think of the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil automatically comes to mind. Yet it is a little-known fact its birthplace is actually the Peruvian region of the Amazon river and rainforest. This section of the Amazon is the most untouched, bearing a large concentration of wildlife and flora in the vast protected area of Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. The Amazon jungle covers nearly 60% of Peru’s landscape and is home to hundreds of Indigenous communities, who rely solely on this land to survive. This area has also become the last remaining habitat where visitors have the opportunity to spot some of the world’s endangered species in the wild, such as jaguars, pink river dolphins, and harpy eagles. With daily direct flights to and from the Peruvian capital of Lima, guests can easily get to Iquitos, the gateway to the Amazon in Peru and starting point of luxury cruises on the Amazon River. Fun fact: Iquitos is the largest inland port in the world only accessible by river and air.

8. VISIT CUSCO, THE CAPITAL OF THE INCA EMPIRE

In Cusco, every corner is filled with history, as the ancient capital of Peru (during the Inca Empire) still preserves remnants of the most important power of this ancient civilization. The ancient history can be felt in every step you take through the streets of thetown, which seem to have stopped in time. Cusco is best explored on foot, with a walk through its historic center or along the Andean Baroque route, where you can admire buildings with the ancient colonial touch. Museums are a favorite space for visitors, and one that you must not miss is the Temple of the Sun (Qorikancha). Besides, be amazed by the Twelve-Angled Stone or marvel at the art of the artisans in the San Blas neighborhood. A visit to the colorful San Pedro Market can give you an insight into the idiosyncrasy of the people of Cusco.

7. EXPLORE THE SACRED VALLEY

The Sacred Valley is a magnificent valley close to Cusco, irrigated by the Urubamba River, and surrounded by fertile lands, snow-capped mountains, and a lot of history. The Incan Empire ruled this area for little more than hundred years until the arrival of the Spanish, and it’s here that the Incas built their main citadels and temples, as well as thousands of terraces where they grew different agricultural products, especially corn. Today, the Sacred Valley is one of Peru’s most visited tourist regions and home to the country’s best luxury hotels, resorts and spas. The thousands of terraces built by the Incas more than five hundred years ago are still visible. The Sacred Valley – or Valle Sagrado as it is known in Peru – is dotted with Inca Ruins, with Machu Picchu being the absolute star attraction (and deserving its own mention in this list). Other famous archaeological sites include Chinchero, Ollantaytambo, Pisac and more.

6. HIKE IN THE COLCA CANYON

Peru’s third most visited tourist destination is the Colca Canyon, a 3 hour drive from the city of Arequipa. Hiking in the Colca Canyon is a popular activity, offering spectacular scenery. Most trekking routes to the bottom of the Canyon can be done in 2 days with an overnight stay in one of the villages.

5. TAKE A BOAT RIDE ON LAKE TITICACA

Lake Titicaca, the freshwater lake located at the Bolivian border in the southern Andes, is as boundless as it is beautiful.

4. RIDE THE LUXURIOUS HIRAM BINGHAM TRAIN

The Hiram Bingham Train is one of the most efficient – and glamorous – ways to reach Machu Picchu. In less than four hours, this elegant train completes the spectacular journey between the city of Cusco and Machu Picchu, the sacred Inca city high in the Andes mountains. Named after the US explorer who re-discovered Machu Picchu in 1911, Hiram Bingham’s striking blue and gold livery stands out against Peru’s verdant landscapes. Hosting up to 84 guests, the train’s carriages include two dining wagon, a bar wagon, and an open view scenery wagon to soak in the views. Decorated in the style of 1920s Pullman carriages, each train car has been furnished in polished wood and brass with large comfortable armchairs. The train is managed by Belmond, one of the world’s most luxurious hotel brands.

3. EXPLORA AREQUIPA

Peru’s second largest city, Arequipa, is often referred to as the ‘White City’. Not to be missed during a visit to Arequipa are the impressive Cathedral, the lively San Camilo Market and the magnificent Monasterio de Santa Catalina (the convent is still a functioning religious complex as well as a tourist site).

2. WALK THE EPIC INCA TRAIL

The most epic way to get to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of an organized trek along the iconic Inca Trail, a section of one of the hundreds of Incan roads built as the empire expanded. The Inca Trail is one the bucket list of many travelers, not only for the sense of achievement but also because it immerses you in stunning Andean landscapes from cloud forest to rainforest and passes a handful of other Inca ruins. The 43 km (27 mi) hike takes four days, camping every night. A maximum of 500 permits are issued for the Inca Trail each day, over half of which are taken up by guides, and the porters. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes, with varying durations and levels of comfort, including luxury camping trips.

1. BE WOWED BY MACHU PICCHU

At the top of a mountain, enormous and imposing stone blocks joined without using mortar were combined to create one of the most important religious, political and cultural centers of the Inca empire: the mist-shrouded citadel of Machu Picchu. Revealed to the world in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, this Inca city is divided into two large sectors: the agricultural sector, with an extensive network of terraces; and the urban sector, with fine structures including the Sun Temple. The intensely green terraces and the imposing mountains surrounding the site combine to create a stunning landscape which surpasses visitors’ expectations. No matter how many times you have seen a photograph of the iconic Inca ruins, nothing prepares you for sense of awe that this magical place elicits in its Andes mountain setting, clinging as it does to rock and jungle.
